    McLaren Facility

    Hope you like this.

    http://www.archdaily.com/185257/mclaren-production-centre-foster-partners/

    Architects: Foster + Partners
    Location: Woking, Surrey
Project Team: Norman Foster, David Nelson, Nigel Dancey, Iwan Jones, Dominik Hauser, Nina Linde, Chris Johnstone, Kathleen Mark, Nicholas Papas
    Client: McLaren Group
    Project Year: 2011
    Project Area: 34,500 sqm
    Photographs: McLaren, Nigel Young

The McLaren Production Centre, the second building designed by Foster + Partners at McLaren’s Woking site, has been officially unveiled by Prime Minister David Cameron today. The 34,500 sqm facility will house the assembly of all future McLaren Automotive road cars, including the recently- launched MP4-12C high-performance sports car. It has already led to the creation of a large number of skilled manufacturing jobs.

The state-of-the-art McLaren Production Centre is located to the south-west of the existing McLaren Technology Centre. The two buildings are connected by a subterranean walkway and share a common language of details and materials. The entrance, echoing the existing building, is a circular glass drum beneath the overhang of the roof canopy.

As a manufacturing facility, the building is inherently flexible, with a wide span between columns and fully integrated services. The linear arrangement of the two-story structure mirrors the flow of the production line: components are delivered; the cars are assembled, painted and tested, and then pass through a rolling road and car wash, before leaving the building. Beneath this floor there is a full basement level for storage and plant, and above is a mezzanine floor with views over the production line. Every stage of production takes place under the same roof. Initially it will take 10 days for an MP4-12C to be assembled; at peak production it will be possible to build one in five days, with a new car joining the line every 45 minutes.

Although the McLaren Production Centre represents a major increase in McLaren’s capabilities at its Woking campus, the building is dug into in the gentle incline of the site, to give it a discreet presence in the landscape. The lower floor is sunk completely below ground and the superstructure is almost invisible from the nearby road, with further screening provided by extensive tree planting.

The new McLaren Production Centre is designed to be environmentally efficient. The roof collects rainwater and has been designed to integrate photovoltaic panels in future; and the building incorporates a low-energy system of displacement ventilation. No soil was removed from the site, and all excavated material has been used to conceal the building within the green-belt landscape.

Great plant! Looks already tempting to work there - so neat!

They probably should have used their architect to design the car, too! angry

    Re: McLaren Facility

very nicely done ! with all the white they should put a coke machine somewhere smiley

    Re: McLaren Facility

Very impressive facility.  Thanks for posting. Smiley

    Re: McLaren Facility

The new factory is the subject of a documentary this Sunday on BBC2 in the UK. I've posted a thread elsewhere on RT.

    Re: McLaren Facility

I'm becoming really interested, professionally, in industrial architecture, and this is really a great example. It strikes me as something that is going to become really, really important to western countries that have neglected industry over the past decade or two - how to reinvest in industry/manufacturing/production in a more seamless and environmentally respectful way.

    Another look:

That one long elevation is hilarious though. I'd love to have the guts to put something like that on the wall during a studio review...

    Re: McLaren Facility

Very nice building, no doubt about that, but I found Foster´s initial headquarter complex for McLaren to be much more inspirational. The composition of surfaces, materials and details on that one have been very tastefully arranged, something I am missing on the newly established workshop facilities.

Ha!  exactly;  my initial thought was that the assembly workers would look forward to lots of orange paint orders, since it the cars are the only thing that adds a dash of colour to this building.

    Re: McLaren Facility

Not fully understanding the scope of McLaren's operations, can some please tell me where they made the money to afford such a large modern HQ and fund their operations of both the road car and F1 division?

As far as I know McLaren primarily operates as a race team, making the occasional special edition road car (SLR, F1). Until the MP-12C4ABCDEZYZ, they had not had a road car in over 3 years.

And SLR & F1 were made in such limited quantity, the profits of these cars surely can't be enough to fund the construction of such a large facility and the operations of both a Formula 1 team and full on road car venture (technicians, dealers, sales staff manufacturer, etc. etc.)

Worse, I know F1 is pretty much a money losing venture even when you win,  as the cost of funding a team for the year arch well into the $280MM a year price range. There is prize money for winning races. I have no idea what this is, and strangely enough in my 12 years of following F1 I have never heard a broadcaster mention what the prize money amount was for 1st, 2nd, 3rd (unlike say NASCAR where they tell you, "It's the shoot out for $1MM plus $100,000 driver bonus") but even then, could the prize money in F1 + Sponsorship money minus the operational cost of the team still support all of McLaren's operations?

    Re: McLaren Facility

heard from a banking guy who's analysing the car industry - that the cost of building is approx 30% of the Sales price -dunno if this right - but there is some margin obviously

    Re: McLaren Facility

McLaren is one of the few teams in F1 that seem to earn money. Furthermore McLaren is backed by several investors and I could imagine that the Automotive branch of the company has received some additional money as well.

    Re: McLaren Facility

McLaren is planning to sell 4000 units per year.

Also, McLaren is now earning quite a lot of money from consultancy services. They advise companies unconnected with F1 on how to make their operations more efficient.

Plus McLaren has been receiving its engines from Mercedes for free.
