As far as price, as they say, if you're concerned then you probably can't afford one. - No one knows yet, but I'd expect it to command a premium over both the E55 and M5, it's a Porsche. Hopefully the dollar will continue to gain weight against the euro as well...

You are right, I can't afford it if it cost more than the Maserati! But in all seriousness, if I was in the market for a sports sedan, I would still be looking for the best value car out there, and if the 4.5 V8 Panamera comes in at $125k, there is no way I would buy it. Afterall, you could argue that Maserati is even more prestigious in terms of brand name, and that is only $100k. Hence my conclusion is that the Panamera cannot go beyond the pricing of the Italian.

    Exactly, thanks Mike.

Unfortunately, where I'm from (Rochester, New York), it is VERY snowy and front-engine/RWD is a nightmare, especially up my street and driveway, which is why I (and many Rochesterians) drive AWD cars for the winter (and why I have an Audi S4). Any chance PAG would make an AWD Panamera? Maybe an AWD/turbo version, ala the 911?

BTW, Grant, my relatives in Evergreen (now moving back east) got buried in that awesome spring blizzard a couple of years ago (I think they measured about 80 freakin' inches of snow in the front yard!). Of course, the only internal combustion engine humming in the aftermath of that was in their portable generator.

Yeah, we got to miss work here in town for three days (I live so close that I could've walked, but the offices were closed). That was the biggest storm in 100 years

    Hey Grant,

The Rolls is the Phantom, and yeah, that's BMW.

But, I think that most of the Cayenne's success stems from the fact that someone at Porsche made a savvy business decision to capitalize on the very trendy SUV market. Even so, the Cayenne was met with a lukewarm reception. Their first year target was 25,000 units. They missed it by roughly 5,000.

    .

The initial sales target was 25,000 for the first FULL fiscal year. For sure during FY 02/03 the Cayenne was only available from January onwards in Europe and From Mid-March in the US. They achieved 20,600 sales which is a great achievement.

The Cayenne was from day 1 a tremendous success.

    Re: Panamera is officially launched

The Cayenne is a success for Porsche, not really a success for the dealers when you consider the discounts.

    Re: Panamera is officially launched

Depends on where you are I guess. My dealer does not offer discounts on Cayennes.

    Re: Panamera is officially launched

I don't see the problem to offer from time to time incentives.

    - I believe dealers are happy to sell more cars (better absorbtion of fixed costs).
    - It is also dragging to dealerships people who would have never considered buying a Porsche and eventually they'll buy a Porsche Sportcar (Boxster, 911 or Panamera). Over 60% of Cayenne buyers were not Porsche drivers. Considering the very high loyalty rate of Porsche customers of 70% of them will buy another Porsche .... So it's may be not such bad deal to offer some incentives to get repeat cutomers ...
    - As far as I know dealers are happy to see their service department busy ... and additional volumes is clearly bringing additional business.
    - Dealers complained for many years they had only 2 products to sell .... now they have 3 .... and 4 in 4 years.
    - I would also like to add, that today in the US, I'd rather be a Porsche dealer than a GM dealer .... Porsche is hitting all time high sales with very little to zero incentives while other dealers are struggling to sell cars with razor thin margins ....

I would think it would be easier to design a new V10 much like they developed a more economic engine for the 996carrera departing from the previous dry-sump flat-6 now used only in the 996TT/GT2 and GT3. Or simply extract more HP from the V8.

It's going to be interesting to see if the current fad/trend of using V10 engines is going to fade now that F1 is switching to V8 power from next season.

Anyway Porsche has never given into the horsepower wars of the other german manufacturers so we may see a CLS55AMG (476HP) competiror in the Panamera with a CayenneTT engine, but I doubt we will see Porsche building a senseless 65AMG equivalent. But who knows, I just speculating here...

What I would like to see in the Panamera is a high reving, naturally aspirated V8 engine, like the new 6.3l AMG engine. (and RS4 and upcoming M3 engines)

    Quote:

As long as we don't see the VW-V6 they used inthe Cayenne V6 in the Panamera its OK (there is a CLS with a 270HP 3.5l V6 so its posible though )

I would put any money on that, Porsche needs to fund the 1bn development cost of the Panamera

    Re: Panamera is officially launched

As far as funding is concerned ..... no big deal.

    a) Porsche has Euro 2.3bn NET cash on the balance sheet.
    b) Their auto business is generating around Euro 700m of free cash-flow every year.... So they can easily spend Euro 330m per year for the next 3 years.
