    value of 996 cabs

I am looking to buy a 996 cab because I sold my nsx. I would like a C4 because I live in Michigan, but because of the extra 600 lbs I've been told its a bad idea for resale. Also I was told from a friend of mine who runs Gulf Performance in South Florida (very large tuner shop) that the 99's had bad engines vs. the 2000's. Does anyone know if that is true? Is the 997 definately coming to the us market within the next 12 months or so? What is going to happen to the value of the 996's since Porsche is trying to go back to the traditional round eye look?

    Re: value of 996 cabs

I have a C4C and you won't believe how much it depreciates, it's amazing
But then, like RC always says, if you buy a new car, it's bound to happen, don't look at the resale value.
In France, C4s and more expensive than C2s which makes sense, and if you look at Porsche's performance numbers, there is virtually no difference between the C2 and the C4 coupe or Cab actually.
The 997 is schedule for end of 2004, and yes, 996 value is gonna drop as a result but that's to be expected anyway.
Do not listen to press, the new 997 will NOT get round lights (The fog lights in the bumpers is ugly and very expensive on top of that)
It will get a new light design, I saw it in Autocar a few months ago, again, all integrated in one piece but "rounder" than the current 996 but not round like the 993 and previous were.
Something in between the Cayenne and the Carrera GT IMO.

    Re: value of 996 cabs

Depreciation is not just a problem for Cabs but virtually all Porsches and all cars in general. It's just that Porsches, which are more expensive than most to begin with, take a bigger hit when measured in absolute dollars or Euros.

My 1999 C2 Coupe sold for $35K less than what I paid for it after 3.5 years and that doesn't count almost $30K in upgrades I put into it. My 2002 M3 Coupe is selling for $18K less than what I have in it after 1.5 years, so this is not just a Porsche issue. I'm sure people who have Mercedes have similar stories.

And it's not just the "plain" cars. GT2s are selling for much less than they were less than one year ago. A friend of mine just bought a low mileage 2002 996TT for around $80K. So it happens to all models regardless of how "special" they may be.

If you want to avoid big depreciation hits, stick to buying 2-3 years old cars.

    Re: value of 996 cabs

where did your friend find a low mileage 2002 turbo for 80k? I have access to auctions and they dont seem to be that cheap there.

    Re: value of 996 cabs

He bought it from an individual seller from the Mid-West but I don't remember the specifics. Maybe there was a divorce involved or something like that.
