VW Touareg Sets World Altitude Record

From GermanCarFans (click here for link to web page)

They used the Expedition version of the Touareg, which has some very nice off-road accessories, a built in winch, roof carrier, serious skid plates, etc.

    Quote:
On 29 January 2005, battling against icy winds and a lack of oxygen, the expedition team fought its way through the lunar landscape of the Ojos del Salado, the world's highest volcano, in a standard Touareg Expedition to achieve the world's altitude record for vehicles. The altimeter and GPS system displayed an altitude of 6080 metres. This is the highest point on the surface of the Earth that a vehicle can reach and safely return from. On 16. February the confirmation came from London: the record has been officially recognised by the "Guinness Book of Records". The Touareg has thus impressively proven its strengths in extreme conditions and surpassed the performance of all other off-road vehicles.

What we need is a Cayenne the will scale Mt. Everest.

Re: VW Touareg Sets World Altitude Record

why is 6080 the threshhold? probably air getting too thin?

that, terrain conditions, the person driving the car could be at risk, tires, oil, gas, the water in the coolant, all that stuff that could just freeze or break if it gets to cold

Re: VW Touareg Sets World Altitude Record

Just to help the Americans here, that's 19947.45 feet. I'm sure a Cayenne with a good long run up could make the extra 54 feet to go over 20K!

That's almost as high at Denali which, to help the Europeans and other friends, is the highest mountain in North America at 6194 meters.

I wonder how high you could get in a VW Phaeton? I guess that depends on what you're smoking.

Actually, Mt. McKinley is the highest mountain in North America. I thought for an instance that they discovered a newer mountain that I missed in grade school geography. Mt. McKinely is located in Denali National Park and Reserve which was expanded in 1980 to include Mt. McKinely National Park. OK, enough of the geograph and history lesson.

Maybe there's a rock wall or something at that point.

I had to look that one up, too. They are one and the same, Denali being the native American name and the name now generally preferred by mountaineers.
