    NON Porsche Shop Service--- Survey

Recently, a new shop opened up near my home.   It has three mechanics who are former Porsche (17 years) , BMW (9 years) and Audi (? years) dealer folks.  The feedback (two+years) from club members is that they do very good work, have a much lower hourly rate and estimation process (ie: their  estimates are also lower,,,along with the lower hourly rate) and , the parts are not marked up (also are open to other part sources, if warranted).  Shop is clean and seems to be very well equipped. They are adding one to two more mechanics because of ' word of mouth ' advertising.

Our area has two dealers which are owned by the same people. I have had good experiences, but, they know they have a monopoly and 'price' their services accordingly.

Thoughts on your use of these types of shops (if,  at all), and experiences, and,  cautions and/or  kudos.....   Thanks Smiley

Re: NON Porsche Shop Service--- Survey

I used to go to independent shops, with mixed results. Some were good, some were great. One folded up his tent in the middle of the night and left the landlord to sort out what to do with the customers half-repaired cars.

When I had my 964 in the nineties, I was going to the top guy in Dallas, former head of local Porsche Club, who simply couldn't trace down an electrical glitch. Opened the hood and didn't know where the battery was located in a 964. One day, just for convenience, I dropped the car off at Park Place Motors for service. I mentioned the electrical glitch to the service writer and he knew exactly what it was -- a typical first year bug found only on 1989 and 90 964s. Fixed. Done.

So I never went back to the other places. Service was too good, prices always seemed fair and since they were the closest to my house I couldn't beat the convenience.

Not saying you can't have a good experience with the independent shop. Just depends.

And it depends on what you're driving. A 964 or 993, I think I'd take to an independent if I had one close who I trusted. My 997 is under warranty, so it's not even an issue.

My experience is similar to Carrageous. I have used both but prefer to use the dealership if I can afford it. They just do a better job. The one exception I will make is tires. I found a local installer that does a better job at a lower price. I buy from Tire Rack and have them drop shipped to the installer.

Re: NON Porsche Shop Service--- Survey

Stick to the officiel dealer as long as your car is under warranty. Afterwards, go to the shop where you feel best, where the people are working with a passion.

Yes, there are some very good independent repair shops, I'm pretty sure about it but they usually charge the same money the official dealers charge. If they are much cheaper, something is wrong.

Btw, just as a side note: RUF has now the only official (!), yes, Porsche repair shop (not dealership) in Germany. I can highly recommend him, I almost know all the people there personally and they really have passion for the cars. Unfortunately this won't help people in the US but it may be a hint for those who live in or near Bavaria. Prices are very close to the official repair shops though.

RUF now has a shop in Dallas, does repairs, said to do full RUF conversions. Has anyone had any experience with them?

Re: NON Porsche Shop Service--- Survey

According to my knowledge, RUF does not have any shop or official repair service in Dallas.

Are you referring to RAC Performance ?

You are correct, RAC. They had done so much marketing around their RUF connection, I thought they were actually a RUF shop. My mistake.

    Damn, that's two for today!mail
