Trade in value. What's the range?

If you trade in your low mileage and mint condition 997S for an 07 Turbo what kind of trade in value will you get?

Lemme put it these two ways:

    1. You're a bit of a pr*ck by salesman's standards. You find the right car and are willing to do whatever it takes to drive a hard bargain and get the most for your trade in.

    2. You don't like to argue, cajole, d*ck around and just expect to be treated fairly (not screwed) and want to write a check and get things done.

Assuming both new TT cars will be MSRP (maybe existing 07 will be discounted a bit compared to ordered and waited for 08) my question is this:

What kind of difference in money are we talking about between buyer 1 and buyer 2 above?

Is the difference between 1 and 2 a few percent or a significant, say 10 percent on a us$130K TT car? Feel free to suggest a dollar amount if possible... .

Re: Trade in value. What's the range?

I'd say little difference if any between 1 & 2. Repeat business way more important.

Good, my typical strategy is to not look very eager and then eventually just write the check and end it. Oh..., the worst part: I worry later that I got screwed.

Why worry about getting screwed. Unless you're a professional negotiater, e.g. sports agent, you can assume the dealer got the better end of the deal. Even then, they're not going to sell you the car if you're getting the better end.

Re: Trade in value. What's the range?

how many miles on your trade? MMD don't be too crestfallen if low $60's is the best they are willing to offer.

I've found two factors which have afforded me better than average/preferential trade-in/ purchase consideration at the dealer:
    1) the car i want has been in inventory for a while eating up floor plan expense, also good potential timing now as we are at model year end,
2)referred a handful of friends and family to the same sales manager, net result being half a dozen more Audi and Porsche sales for them... it's a win/win building goodwill capital over time.

Re: Trade in value. What's the range?

When I bought mine, I emailed the internet salesman (of a large dealership about 4 hours away) an offer below what I thought they would take for a car they had in stock and they accepted my offer with little or no haggling. Of course it was the last of July '06--end of month, end of the fiscal year and end of the model year. When I asked him about a trade-in (an '03 BMW) he gave me a sight-unseen idea what they would give me for it--I decided to sell it myself (a 15-20% difference).

Re: Trade in value. What's the range?

There's one factor I would add to the mix. These guys deal with people like you and me ALL the time.

When I was trading in my BMW last Autumn, I spoke to a dealer who told me a price over the phone (before he had even seen the car), I then took it to him with the intention of selling it and we agreed a price. He simply walked around the car once. Never even opened the engine lid. I asked him afterwards why he didn't do that. He said simply that he buys and sells dozens of used BMWs every month and that he could usually tell within 5 minutes of talking to the owner whether he will want to buy the car. The car is a known quantity when it leaves the factory, he said, what affects it is the level of care/abuse meted out by the owner. Rather than look for signs of good care/abuse, he simply weighs up the owner. He told me he has never made a bad buy in 26 years in the business. What he said really opened my eyes to their trade.
