    I have always maintained that 918 owners should receive priority because you as you stated they paid close to a million dollars for a car that initially wasn't being reviewed that well. It is only right that limited models go to them first. However, that does not justify ignoring their base of good customers who have bought several Porsches but do not have the money to pay a million dollars for a model.

    I also agree that whatever enhancements found in the R will be found in the 992 if not sooner in the 991.2.

    What puzzles me is the is the car itself. Other than the claim that it is a drivers car there is nothing to distinguish the car other than it is a manual with more hp than a regular 911. No doubt it is lighter than most 911's but it's performance isn't commiserate with the hp and weight. To make the car lighter the car has plastic interior, no radio or A/C and plastic exterior. To get this the buyer is paying a hefty premium.Smiley

    AP skates around the car deficiencies by saying it is not a track car not designed for performance. Rather its about the driving experience and designed for street driving. Yet he lost control of the car while demonstrating it to a reporter. I found that hilarious and sad at the same time. 

    With this post I am ending my Jihad against this car. FWIW, if I was offered A R I would buy it in a heartbeat and flip it at the appropriate time. The passion of hardcore Porsche enthusiast migrates to their wallets and they willingly accept getting fleeced.Smiley

    There are some of us who enjoy driving fast AND enjoy doing it with a manual.  When I go to the track, I am generally driving against my own benchmarks (trying to set and improve my fastest lap time).  I also think it's much more fun and interesting to do so while shifting myself.

    So, what difference does it make it my laps would be 2 sec faster with PDK?  I'm trying to do my best driving (not set the course record which is MANY seconds faster than my best, done with a formula car).  There are always faster (and slower) cars at the track.  In fact, it's annoying to be much faster than the competition.  I find it more frustrating to be stuck behind someone who is slower, rather than let someone faster pass me.  Even with my manual GT4, I find the former happens much more than the latter at the local track (not so much at the Euro tracks Smiley).

    Of course, having a car that is challenging is important, so a new MX-5 with manual (but 155hp only)

    Yes, it is marketing to a disenfranchised segment of Porsche customers who want a car like the R.  I don't see the problem.  You and Nick are not part of that demographic- so be it...

    I think it's great.  You can think it's a fraud if you like, but not sure what pleasure you derive by continuing to throw stones on this thread.  I want Porsche to be encouraged to build more cars like this, to satisfy those of us long-time Porsche customers who are excited by this car.  What's your motivation - that we should go on unserved?  You already said you're done with sports cars.  Is your new mission to convince the rest of us to do the same?

    If something went wrong with the R, like they did with the 991 GT3, the backlash from the VIPs will be much less than the average Joe down the road, the VIPs have a higher tolerance for errors and thus will forgive Porsche. But the average Joe will not, they will demand heads be chopped off like they did with the botched 991 GT3's engine.

    That would be true if the R was a completely new car, or at least partially new. With the exception of the MT nothing is new about this car!

    In other words, Porsche continues to conduct their uncompleted (prototype) Engine/Chassis on dummies with too much *$$$* that have other cars to drive whenever things go haywire.

    Sounds plausible, if that's what some of their rich (loyal?) customers want.  

    But the average Joe will not, they will demand heads be chopped off like they did with the botched 991 GT3's engine.

    GT3 owners deserve 1. Their money back or 2. An engine free of fragile internal parts 3. Blaming the supplier won't fix anything at all, all you're doing is ruining your own reputation.

    Porsche is aware of a lot of things which are still in the 'hush-hush'  Smiley  we'll leave that to the R&D team that are nowhere to be found up to this date.

    And to the fanatics, please save me the lecture and how they will get it right with the next model. Smiley

    My father and his contemporary Porsche owners from the 1970s were VIPs and didn't even know it!!!Smiley  Today's owner has no clue about the poorly supported Porsche-Audi dealer network, Telex to Germany for parts, blown air boxes, leaky case studs, and 1 year 12k mi warranties that were the norm back then w/o a shred of support from PAG.

    Sorry to disappoint, but Porsche did exactly that.

    The latest 918 recall campaigns, yes, it is with a 's', will take 3 weeks to complete just because of all the stuff that are involved. The car will basically stripped to bare chassis then reassembled. 

    The 918 owners are okay with that simply because they have other cars to drive. 

    Try doing a 3 week recall with a regular production GT3, riots will erupt everywhere in the world.

    Thanks for sharing !  One note on the original R used by Porsche in the marketing materials and videos:  This R(chassis R02) is the only R with Long Wheel Base (reconverted from  Short Wheel Base in 1969 by the factory) and remains to the date the only one in this configuration (as all 911 R were "born" in SWB config).  

    Pity Porsche did not propose the color palette of the original 911 R , lost opportunity.
