New Jersey set to host F1 race in 2013

Fantastic idea, the backdrop skyline will be stunning!

Ostensibly, the N. Jersey GP has been confirmed. It all happened rather quicky and secretively if you ask me. There is something fishy I reckon.

I agree, it's a bit odd. On Wednesday, it was a proposal and then on the F1 practice broadcast it was touted as a done deal.

I know that bit of land in Weehawken a little bit and agree it would have the potential to be a great race and a great venue. And the potential to make little Weehawken landowners very rich. Wish I'd bought a parking lot there last week.

Tilke's proposed facilities layout. I see a problem with the ferry terminal spilling straight out onto the start/finish straight but I'm sure they'll work that out.

Re: New Jersey set to host F1 race in 2013

Fan Mark Cipolloni took his camera around and posted a lap on AutoRacing1.com, which is paywalled. So here's what Mark shows as the lap. Note that some roads (from turn 1 to turn 3) don't yet exist. But it gives a good sense of the circuit terrain.

This is looking back down the start/finish line from near turn 1.

    Proposed Start finish straight.jpg

The people standing on the right are coming out of the ferry terminal, one of the main entrances to the track, so having the start/finish right there is probably not going to work.

Turn 1 is proposed to be a 90 degree left, heading toward the river.  Here's Turn 1 to Turn 2, a hard right.

Re: New Jersey set to host F1 race in 2013

Turn 3 is a little less than 90 degrees and then the track heads uphill over a bridge to Turn 4. This is heading from Turn 3 to Turn 4 in the distance.

Coming out of Turn 4 you enter a long uphill drive. The speed bumps will have to go.

Here's Turn 6 viewed from the top. At this point, the circuit has climbed about 150 feet (46 meters) up from the river and you can see Manhattan across the Hudson.

Exiting Turn 6, there's a long, left hand sweeper along the top of the Palisades.

This is the view to the right between Turn 6 anbd Turn 7. Sweet.

Turn 7 is a slight right kink

Turn 9 sweeps right around a park.

    Turn 9.jpg

And then you head down to Turn 10, where we'll start the dive down to river level.

Approaching Turn 10. This has been a fairly fast run along the top and you can see the runoff ahead.

Down into Turn 12, which is the slowest corner on the circuit, a caroussel, 180 degree right hander.

    Into Turn 12.jpg

Coming out of Turn 12, you're into the longest straight on the circuit and presumably the fastest. Presumably the DRS zone, if we still have DRS in 2013.

    Long straight out of 12.jpg

Turn 13 sweeps long right, a little like the waterfront tunnel at Monaco.

Turn 15, as now planned, is a tight left at the next light.

Resurface the streets? Fuggedaboutit!!! They're going to have to resurface all of Weehawken!Smiley

Obviously a lot of work to do -- the entire area is going to have to be redeveloped and renovated. But once the circuit comes up to Monaco standards, the neighborhood should follow.

I'm really excited at the idea of spending the weekend at the race here in Austin and going up to New York to catch the race there, as well.

Let's hope this works because it would be a great, great event. Smiley

Sounds really nice, as long as the Americans embrace F1. Truth be told, it never caught peoples' imagination over there. Smiley

PS: When I visited the US for the first time, I understood why american cars have such soft suspension settings... the size of the potholes and broken surfaces is just amazing! Smiley

You're right, so we'll have to see how people respond. One thing New York gives is a LOT of people from around the world and the attention. What happens in New York definitely doesn't stay in New York, so if they get excited about F1, the rest of the country does, too.

Re: New Jersey set to host F1 race in 2013

It would be after Montreal in June, not after Austin in November.  There would be a lot of work to do.  Forget abou the road surface, that is a minor concern.  None of the people who live in those houses would be able to get in or out of their driveways for a week with all the barriers which would need to go up.  I don't see how they can make it 'safe' enough.  I predict this race will never happen.  Sorry.  We have seen Bernie 'start' many such projects.  I will be happy if Austin makes it.

Re: New Jersey set to host F1 race in 2013

Making it happen on the New Jersey side is very doable -- money talks. Problem is, I'm not sure Bernie has spoken yet. The track was announced on last week's F1 broadcast, but I haven't seen anything official from F1 yet, so we'll have to see.

Hope you're wrong. With that route turned into a real street track, it would be a great race ... and one we could drive our 911s to!

Re: New Jersey set to host F1 race in 2013

Bernie was interviewed for the BBC F1 coverage in India recently and he said bringing a race to the NY area had been an ambition of his for decades ... he previously tried to do it with Graham Hill over 30 years ago.

IMO there's no way he will let this fall by the wayside.

I agree about inconvenience for local residents. For Monaco, the crash barriers usually go up about 4-6 weeks beforehand. It's no big deal - people live their daily lives by driving on the 'circuit' even though the crash barriers are already in place. It will just take a little time to adjust.

My view - Americans are very pragmatic if something brings in cash for the local economy. Local businesses will do very well so, although it's a little inconvenient for some weeks, it's a price worth paying for the boost it will give the local economy.

And for Weehawken, being perceived as "the Monaco of New Jersey" will do wonders for real estate values. smiley

Re: New Jersey set to host F1 race in 2013

Nice article Easy - Not certain what point he was making about the price of the Club seats vs. regular ticket sales - 20M is more than 7.5M so why the big deal.  FYI at Indy they could not get anywhere near $200 per seat.  I imagine the prices will be more like in Montreal - which would make the Paddock club much more expensive than $1500.

There is NO WAY the teams would allow their drivers to run a TOP fuel dragster!  Also I doubt any of them have the attachments to get anywhere near one.  I have seen them in person and many F1 races.  I would get into an F1 car and have a ball.  Forget about the dragster.  300 MPH in 4 sec.  think about it.  Retina damage is common for those guys.

    Cheers

Re: New Jersey set to host F1 race in 2013

I think he was just saying that the ticket revenue from Paddock Club seats and regular seats go to different recipients. Unless I am missing something, I don't think his point was any more complicated than that. Here's the extract:

"Whereas the fans number maybe 100,000 paying $200 each, the Paddock Club is 5,000 people on tickets costing $1500 each. The difference is that the ticket sales go to the promoter, his only way of recouping the costs. The Paddock Club money goes to FOM, who pass on 50% to the teams."
