Re: 991 spy shots Thread Closed

    Carrara:

Check this out from the June issue of flat6:

Porsche speaking: "We know that the PSE on the 997.2 isn't the best. There is very little difference in sound with the standard exhaust. The fault lies with the noise reduction standards which we've had to adhere to and which changed between Phase 1 and Phase 2 [997.1 vs. 997.2]. But since, we've found a way to get very good results these new standards. You will see that on the 991, PSE will be excellent"

"The 991 is very pretty. It's a pure 911 and even if it is slightly larger in dimension you will find it as compact as the 997 when driving. We have worked the weight aspect a lot on this new generation".

Thanks to rennlist for the find and translation!

I agree on the need for a better PSE. I was surprised and disappointed by the PSE on the GTS when I drove one a couple of weeks ago. I have PSE on my 997.1 C4S - it sounds loud and aggressive, much better. Perhaps PSE "matures" over time??

Re: 991 spy shots Thread Closed

I'm judt looking at these 991 pics compared to 997.2 widebody models, and the 991 looks as wide in the rear arches as 997.2. If these 991s are just standard, then how wide will the 991 turbo/C4/GTS look! Will be rather nice I would imagine.

Re: 991 spy shots Thread Closed

    easy_rider911:

So far, we've been looking at spyshots with camouflage, magazine renderings, photoshop efforts etc.

We haven't seen the official Porsche PR yet (which will indicate how Porsche wants us to react to this car), read any magazine reviews, done our own test drives or owned the first cars to come off the production line.

I really do believe that once these things have happened, overall, we will all be very pleased with the result. There may be small details that not all of us will like - but you can't please everyone all the time.

Let's think back to the introduction of the 997 around 2004. Now compare those early cars with the latest incarnations: the 997 Carrera GTS and the 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0. These latest cars are the best that the 997 range could be.

Can you imagine how amazing the 991 will be by the end of its life cycle?

The point is that we are all hoping and expecting the beginning of the 991 life cycle to be better than the comparable models from the end of the 997 life cycle. I personally have no reason to doubt this will be the case.

I guess this post is just my way of saying: sit tight guys, we have good reason to expect that we are going to be very pleasantly surprised.

Easy, i'm not that good in english, but you couldn't explain better what i'm thinking.

At first i found the panamera ugly, now i'm thinkking of replacing the A5 in 2 years by one...

Just little hint... Yesterday, I was with my P source who is on vacation on Adriatic coast. He told me that:"...despite all worries that rennteamers wrote new 991 will be a better sportscar then 997.2-period. 997.2 Carrera GTS or 991 S? You must be kidding-991 S of course. Naturally with all sporty options. In my opinion even base 991 Carrera with 350ps will be more then sufficient for most costumers." He works over 10 years for P in Z. His infos were always 100% correct. I saw 991 again on screen without any camo(press pics are ready!) and I am sold.

    What worries ? Smiley

Performance-wise, the 991 Carrera S will be on the same level as the current GTS but of course this is valid for straight line performance only. I already mentioned that the new chassis is amazing, allowing the new 991 to be a very fast car on the track, even the non-GT models. Around 10 seconds difference from the 997 Carrera S to the 991 Carrera S on the Nordschleife, this really means something.

It still wasn't enough from keeping me going for the Carrera GTS, simply because there won't be a Cab until early summer 2012 and because straight line performance is practically the same. Another reason: The amazing deal I got for the GTS Cab won't be available for some time for the new 991. Many (good ?) reasons not to go for the 991...yet. Smiley

Thanks Carrera for the PSE news really gave me hope in 991.. But if sound was not satisfying I'm going for GT3

My Carrera GTS with PSE actually sounds better than any stock GT3 but only if the flaps are open all the time. Smiley

As to the new improved 991 PSE sound: I'm afraid it will sound better to the driver/passengers but not necessarily louder to the environment. They call this sound engineering but I'm not sure it will work the way they have planned it. I wish it would... Smiley

Sound engineering is fine by me. As long as it's better than BMW's effort with the X5M it would be just fine.

worries were not expressed by you-some other members wrote something like "...longer wheelbase will kill 911 feeling..." etc.

I fully respect and understand reasons behinde your decision to go for 997.2 GTS Cabrio.SmileySmiley

Re: 991 spy shots Thread Closed

Headlights' main design theme is not so much a more Boxster -like upright ovoid shape as viewed from straight ahead, but its slightly " protruding forehead " as viewed from the side , which recalls the side profile of the classic pre-1989 H1 style headlights. Bumper lights that extend around the corner, though not lined up with the intakes, is also a heritage design from way back. Rear lights , being narrow and less droopy , allows two future options : 1). Larger lights for Turbo as on 996 series 2). A better integrated same height sweep of the red reflective lense that connects them on the future C4 model , like pre- 996 rear lense. As for some of these '70s kitchen appliance colors on the " spy pics ", hmmmmmm

Re: 991 spy shots Thread Closed

Thanks for the Pics. The most revealing so far on the front.

Same here, don`t like those wheels... are they gonna be other options? (20')

I suppose this is the new Lime Gold Metallic...

Re: 991 spy shots Thread Closed

Great pictures! From those up close 3rd person angles, the 991 looks VERY, VERY different than the 997, but still evolutionary. I love the chopped looking roof in this picture! And when I first saw these wheels on another car a while back, I didn't like them. But now looking at them they look great!

Re: 991 spy shots Thread Closed

I don't see anyone attending to the car, you should go peel the camo off :p

Re: 991 spy shots Thread Closed

Then steal it and drive it to rennteam headquarters

Re: 991 spy shots Thread Closed

Thanks for the pics! The colour is ugly, but the car looks REALLY good!

You didn't snap any interior shots? Seems like there is no camo on the inside juding from the pictures!

Also.. it looks like the tires are Pirelli in this car. Wonder if the Michelin Super Sport will be N-rated and available in 20" Smiley

Re: 991 spy shots Thread Closed

As far as I am concerned, since Porsche styling is incremental at best, my view is jettison the styling dept and put money into those that are responsible for the exhaust sound. Ferrari has a whole team working on the issue and even the CEO is intimately involved.

Sport enthusiast taste change and I believe today most would like an aggressive sounded sport car.

My wife who by no means is a Ferrari fan told me a story. Recently she was sitting at a stop light and saw a Ferrari going in one direction while a Porsche going in the opposite direction. She said the sound of the Ferrari was sexy and intoxicating. The Porsche sounded the same as all the cars going in its direction which was no sound. She then said, "That is not right. Porsche needs to do something about it." My response; "Forget it; as long as they sell cars they will not change."

The base 991 will sound the same as the 997. None of the videos has caused me to change my mind.

Nick it will be considerably faster on the track while remaining the most reliable and drivable sports car period.

I love this new color, it is very classy

Re: 991 spy shots Thread Closed

OK... I think this can be posted. 991 is NOT any wider then 997.2! 1808mm is exactly the same number. Front track is 53mm wider on the other hand rear track is the same as on 997.2 Carrera S. Overall dimensions are 4491 x 1290 x 1808 with 2450mm wheelbase. 991 Carrera S weight is 1420kg.

991 Carrera S numbers are 400ps/440Nm, red line is at 7800rpm. 4.1s is for 0-100km/h...

Wheels on the pics above are 20". Standard brakes in 991 S are the sime in size as on current 997.2 Turbo.

Re: 991 spy shots Thread Closed

    Thanx for the info KresoF1!!

It's really visible on these latest images tat the front is wider than on 997.2. A shame though that the rear isn't any wider. I would have hoped for that.

0-100 in 4.1 is VERY impressive though Smiley. Is this to be compared with 4.5 on the Carrera S or is this to be compared with Sport Chrono (Sport+) where the time is 4.3Smiley... There must be some fancy changes to the motor as well since the GTS is more powerful and deliver worse performance. 35kg in weight loss can't be the whole explanation?

Carrara, from this picture, we can see that the outline of the blinkers does not go down outboard of the inlet (The lower edge of the cluster hidden by the camo sees to be flush with the upper edge of the inlet all along) Could you please photoshop this in the other pictures?

I think one of the reasons it looks wider is because at the rear greenhouse is pinched together , so the hips are wider, but the track isn't any wider.

I thought it was mentioned somewhere that it is wider than the carrera 4s even... can't find that article (post)... strange...

They did not change the size for optical reasons... If the rear was wider as well the setup / handling would be different, of course Smiley

BTW, in addition to the numbers posted by Kreso the same source (AMS) also mentioned that the 991 is about 30kgs lighter than the 997. This number is the outcome of body weight savings of about 50kg (aluminium etc.) and a contra effect of about 20kg (larger wheels etc.).
