Are the Litronics (Xenon headlights) Self Leveling?

Sorry, dumb question maybe RTFM, right? BUT Mine don't seem to be working if they are SL. Anybody notice this in their car? When I'm going slightly up hill (very small grade) I notice they seem stuck in position.

Re: Are the Litronics (Xenon headlights) Self Leveling?

    yes, they are

MMD, I think you have misunderstood the term self-levelling.

The system is meant to keep the headlight beams from drifting up or down as the pitch of the car varies with different loads, e.g. full tank/full trunk to empty tank and trunk. You wouldn't want the beams to stay "level" in space, regardless of up or down gradients in the road, would you?

Good, that makes sense; thanks for the help Fritz. I lazily thought they would drop lower when you're going up a hill so they wouldn't blind the other driver. This would make sense only at the crest of the hill. The car wouldn't detect the crest and you wouldn't see as much road on the way up.

BTW, The new BMWs supposedly move the headlights in the direction of the turn. A better idea than mine.

Not a new idea, incidentally. I believe some Citroen cars had this feature in the 70s or even 60s. And didn't it feature on some American car long before that, maybe a Cord or the Tucker?

Re: Are the Litronics (Xenon headlights) Self Leveling?

    It was indeed the Tucker

They were introduced on the Citroen DS in 1967, along with self leveling lights, AFAIK. Tucker Torpedo 1948?

Yes, I just googled it. In fact, Tucker never got as far as building any cars for sale, which I hadn't realised. I never got to see the movie.

Re: Are the Litronics (Xenon headlights) Self Leveling?

I wonder about these sideways-moving headlights. Most people are only going rather slowly when they make sharp turns, so there would be more than enough time to react to something you'd see eventually (in one or two seconds) anyway with the fixed headlights. I've only seen the BMW commercial once where they illustrate what a great safety feature it is. It went by too fast so couldn't evaluate what they were showing. But I'm now wondering if it's just another gimmick. What do y'all think?

Re: Are the Litronics (Xenon headlights) Self Leveling?

Although it isn't a new idea (you can see a Tucker at Francis Ford Coppola's winery), I have these directional xenon headlights in my BMW. They are self-leveling (vertical axis) as all xenon lights are required to be. They are also speed and steering-angle sensitive (horizontal axis) and are really fantastic. It's the nearest thing to being able to see around corners.

Oh, good. Glad to hear that, wheeeew. Glad to hear BMW didn't stoop so low as to revitalize and try to sell a gimmick.
