resolution to strut tower fitment on 996tt

It appears now that fitment of a strut tower brace on the 996tt is not possible without moving the power steering resevoir. I have heard claim that one is not needed, because Porsche added extra bracing to the C4/turbo. I cannot comment on this, but I have seen the bracing. Whether it acts in the same manner that a strut brace would is another story... The scary part is that there are firms out there selling this product for an application that it will not work on. Even scarier, is that the manufacturer of this particular brace, a fairly well-know establishment called Racing Dynamics, had never tested one out on a turbo, so they really didn't know why it wouldn't fit the same way it did on the 986 or 996!

FWIW, I have used a Ruf strut tower brace on my 996TT since I got it. It did require some VERY minor repositioning of some tubing under the cover fascia. The question of the need/lack of need is a totally different discussion although after spending typical Ruf $$$ for the bar, I am absolutely CERTAIN it made a dramtic difference in handling! BTW, the car on which I used this has been returned from lease and the bar is available if you're interested.

Re: resolution to strut tower fitment on 996tt

I really want a bar, but I'm a bit dissolutioned at this point. A part such as the strut tower brace that comes with no directions for installation should be made to drop in without fitment issues. Had I known that the power steering booster would have to be moved, I would have thought twice about purchasing it. I'm really not interested in messing about with this particular car at the moment. I'm trying to get my race car ready for an upcoming track day.

    Thanks,

    Dan

Re: resolution to strut tower fitment on 996tt

The Turbo and other 996 models already come with a front strut tower brace built into the firewall, thats why its generally regarded that adding another one is superfluous.

Dan, if you want to improve the handling for the track, your best bet is to start first by upgrading the suspensions if you have not alreday done so, which may be the case, but you have several options for the Turbo, including the factory X73 sport suspension kit that gets many praises among Turbo users and its a factory product which offers a certain guarantee of product quality and efficacy.

Yes - a suspension upgrade does great things for the Turbo. I have X73 and the handling improvement is huge! I don't have a strut brace...I really don't think it would make a difference.

Re: resolution to strut tower fitment on 996tt

    Dock,

Do you (or anyone) know if the X73 is the same as the suspension on my 2005 TSCab, and, if not, what the difference is?

    Thanks.

Re: resolution to strut tower fitment on 996tt

You don't have X73. The X73 suspension is not street legal in the U.S. (in terms of Porsche being able to import for sale those cars with X73).

A Turbo with X73 is about 1 inch lower than any stock U.S Turbo, and the X73 springs and shocks are different. Also X73 comes with stiffer motor mounts. It's a much different ride than stock.
