    CF Illuminated Door Sills

Guys - I'm considering CF illuminated door sills for the GT3 spec. I first want to check what you think of them. Does anyone have them? Like them? Any pics? Many thanks!

    Waste of money...

    Re: CF Illuminated Door Sills

Retrofitting is a waste of $$$ - it would run you over 1K (assuming you get the parts from Sunset Imports which is 15% over dealer cost) including labor.

I don't know the price of the option when putting together a factory order though....if it's slightly more than a factory CF door sill (non-illuminating) option, I'd go for it. Retrofit, no.

    Re: CF Illuminated Door Sills

I consider it bit of a waste of money,--remember, some day you'll have to figure out how to replace the light bulb in that thing, too. It's one more of Porsche's little things to separate us from $$. The ONLY time it is seen is when the door is open!

Thanks all. Just saved a grand.

The option code is CXD and the price is $1380 as a factory order option. However, it was unavailable as a factory order option as of last week.

    <sigh>

Didn't know it was that much from factory.

    Save your money.

??? There aren't any bulbs to replace; its electroluminescant....(sames as the Moto Razr Kepad Lighting)

    Re: CF Illuminated Door Sills

    JFT,
I've got the SS illuminated ones...I love them...sure they're a waste of money...so are most of the other Porsche interior options. Add them, and if you want to shave a few $$$'s later, dump them....They do look slick!!

So where does it source its energy?

    Re: CF Illuminated Door Sills

It's connected to the battery I believe indirectly through a wiring harness underneath the door sill.

Jfraser has a document on a DIY installation, this may help you.

Not exactly sure what you mean....It get's its power from the car battery...If you mean how does it work, then.....

"Electroluminescence is the conversion of electricity directly into light.

This is not how an incandescent bulb works. In an incandescent bulb, the electricity produces heat, and the heat produces light. Electroluminescence is much more efficient because it converts the electricity directly to light.

Typically, it consists of a very thin panel which uses high voltage to energize phosphor atoms that produce light. The panel itself is extremely simple. You take a thin glass or plastic layer, coat it with a clear conductor, coat that with a very thin layer of phosphor, coat the phosphor with a thin plastic and then add another electrode. Essentially, what you have is two conductors (a capacitor) with phosphor in between. When you apply current to the conductors, the phosphor energizes and begins emitting photons. "

What does this actually mean....well the bulb display isn't going to 'blow' like a regular bulb....Typically it will dim (phosphur half life)...Given that the illumination is a few seconds to a max of 10 mins(car shuts off the light after 10 mins)....I'd say the car would be soooo old by the time you think that the light looks cr@ppy that the replacement of the door sill would be the least of your worries....

    Re: CF Illuminated Door Sills

If you got the dough why not, i think it looks hot as hell. Especially when its' going to say turbo. =)

In my opinion that's for a show car not for a GT3, maybe if you have a cabrio that it is to show you to the chicks... as already said by others a waste of money, for a GT3!

Chicks would love it -- it's the one thing that's makes me think over and over again if its worth it. I keep telling myself it's not but...who knows

    Re: CF Illuminated Door Sills

It does look nice at night though...

    Re: CF Illuminated Door Sills

    Pretty swet,--but not cheap.

I wanted them on my car (which I received March 1st). They said I could not order them from the factory. Thus it would have to be dealer fit.

They gave me a price. Told me how much labour was involved. And strangely I lost interest!

    ...Add

    Re: CF Illuminated Door Sills

What price did they give you out of interest including Labour and VAT?

    Re: CF Illuminated Door Sills

I installed them two weeks ago, I noticed today that they are not looking as bright as when I first got them, is it normal? Are they now into normal brightness? BTW they look a lot like the pic posted by gian61 but they did look brighter though; any comment on that?

I imagine, they have now settled into 'normal brightness'....

    Re: CF Illuminated Door Sills

I'm on my second set of SS illuminated sills.
The first ones that came with the car incorrectly read "Carrera S" - these were replaced with the correct "Carrera 4S" as shown.
They are certainly one of the more expensive frivolous options but I must admit,....I really love them! You can't help but see them and smile every time you get in the car. My next 911 will have them too!

    Re: CF Illuminated Door Sills

Seeing that makes you smile and me wish I had .....

    Re: CF Illuminated Door Sills

Hey Coochas, are your sills as bright as the 1st days or not as intense?

    Re: PSE labour cost

Dear JFraser rennteamer: I heard that you have access to the Porsche service bulletin. My dealer here in the NE is telling me that PSE installations takes him 8-9 hours. I heard that the service bulletin stated only 440 TU, which is app. 4 1/2 hours. Are these time limits binding to the dealer or is he free to fix his price? It would be nice if you could supply me a copy of this bulletin. I thank appreciate your help and advice on this.

    Re: PSE labour cost

Waste of money and weight on a GT3
