    914 "8"

    I have a very good friend and Porsche lover, that today talked to me that he read, can't remember where, that sometime there was a 914 "8" model (in fact he has owned 5 914's in the past!), and there where two, privatelly owned by the Porsche family......

    Does anyone know something about this car?
    does exist?
    why "8"?


    P.D.In my humble personal oppinion, this would be a very wise road wich Porsche should have followed (central and 8 cylinder maybe?)...unfortunatelly this was not the history....but allways there is time to change the way...

    There were two special 914s made by the factory, using air-cooled eight-cylinder engines from the 908 race car. You can sometimes see one of them at the Porsche factory museum. These two cars were officially designated "914 S".

    Thank you very much, my friend will appreciate a lot the info....specially coming from an "U Boat Commander".....he loves those submarines! (Not joking)

    In any case, can you imagine if they would follow that technology, central engine with 8 cylinder?

    What would we have nowdays?........

    I suppose there where reasons to not follow that pad...with Porsche's traditional brigthness, for sure we would have much more exciting cars...once again, I hope (maybe I'm sure) they are going to continue...someday....

    Well, they skipped over 8cyl for the most part (except for the 914-8 and 908 discussed in this thread). Recently, you could buy a Cayman/Boxster with a mid 6 or a Carrera GT with a mid 10.

    I think if you drive a Cayman S and a CGT, you can imagine what a mid 8 Porsche might drive like.

    Some people think the next 911 (998) may offer a mid 8 but there are many who disagree.

    Two of Porsche's most wonderful racecars were a mid 12 (917) and a mid 4 (550 Spyder)...

    And let's not forget that Porsche made four 904s with a flat 8. That was probably a version of the same motor as what made it into the 914S.

    Nobody really thinks the 998 will include a flat 8. It would be too heavy for a rear engined car. Most likely, you will see an improved version of the 3.8l engine or an increase to 4.0l, which I've read is probably the limt for Porsche's flat 6 configuation.
