    Base 997 or 996 4S

Due to family reasons I had to cancel my order for a 997 4S (luckily I got my deposit back). However I am still longing for 911. Sorting things out it looks like I could buy a base 997 or a low-mileage (~35000 km, 3 year old) 996 4S fully loaded before I go back to getting a new 997 in 2-3 years from now. As many of you have come from a 996 what would you recommend:
    1) Buying a base 997 (and I mean practically no options) OR
    2) Get a 996 4S
    Thanks for your help!

    Re: Base 997 or 996 4S

I would get a used 2005 997. I'm sure you can get a very low mileage one. Hey you probally can get an 05 997 C4S.

    Re: Base 997 or 996 4S

Another point I forgot to mention. If you have to wait 2 - 3 years for a new one that really isn't that long. Remember you will need to order the car and you would really be looking at 1 - 2 years before ordering. If you have something to drive now you could save your money for a big down payment.

    Just a thought.

    Re: Base 997 or 996 4S

Regarding saving money: I will be paying cash and I do not want to lease as the interest rates are ridiculous here. That's why I am looking for a nice ride for the time being (it will be a fun car, I have a daily drive).

When you say get a 997: is the base one still better than a 996 4S?

The consensus is that the 997 at any level is a major improvement over the 996.

IOW, simply put, the 997 is significantly "better" than the 996.

I have to add (sorry) IMHO, neither car is worth buying if you have a family and are experiencing a financial problem. Sorry.

    Re: Base 997 or 996 4S

That is a matter of person choice. I drove a 996 CS4 but decided to get a 997 (base model) because I like the feel better. Also I was looking to keep the car a few years so the 997 seemed like a better choice for me. Really both are great cars and you will be happy with either. I would drive both and buy the one you like best.

    Re: Base 997 or 996 4S

If you plan on winter driving, get the 996 C4S. The C4S will have taken a major depreciation hit up front as well.

If you don't plan on winter driving, then it is a no brainer: get the base 997. It's a much more fun car to drive. You can figure that one out for yourself by taking them both out for 60-90 minutes each.

    Re: Base 997 or 996 4S

I would not recommend neither ,, "reason" ,, because its not quite what you wanted..You will see 997's about while'st driving thinking ""if only""..
Also 2 - 3 yrs time and you will have your just rewards with a 998 order , and being way better off for it pocket wise..

    throt..

While that may be true, you only live once, and you can always rationalize waiting longer. I say dive in and start enjoying. Trade up later if you must - it's only money. (And if you gotta ask how much . . . )

    Re: Base 997 or 996 4S

There is a lot of truth in that. To precise I had to cancel not due to finances but for family reasons I had to get a bigger car for the wife to taxi around the kids...
In this situation I could not justify to myself getting a new 997 4S for more than $150k (that is what it costs here ). So I thought I could maybe get one and spend half... or... wait until I could reasonably justify the 150k (I doubt there is a reasonable justification )...

    Re: Base 997 or 996 4S

    Buy a used 997.

    Re: Base 997 or 996 4S

As an ex 996 C4S owner, i can say buy a 996 C4S. It is really best 996 design.

    if you have said "any S of 997 to 996 C4S" , i would definately say 997 C/C4S but for a base 997, 996 C4S would not be a bad choice.

    Re: Base 997 or 996 4S

I think they are different cars. I had the same dilemna few months ago and was really looking at a 996 C4S...and I ended up with a 997S (used with low milage).
    Reasons:
+ for the 996 C4S: the look: Best of 996s
    - the 4WD (personal choice)
    - not as "light and agile" as the 997
    - not really cheaper 2nd hand for 2003/4 builds than 997s
    - interior quality
    - more difficult to find with the PSE option (maybe just here)
I am happy with my choice :-)

    Re: Base 997 or 996 4S

surely get the base 997... it is a no-brainer... you'd be getting the new look, the new interior, and THE perfect 3.6 liter engine... I opted for a 996 Anniversary (the Anniversary is loaded with options, including the X51 power kit) instead of a base 997, regretted it, and ended up getting trading into a 997, and loosing on my Anniversary...

    Re: Base 997 or 996 4S

Thank you all for your comments. I had a chance to take a short drive in a 996 4S and was surprised how different it is compared to a 997... I am starting to search the German market (best place from here) for a nice 997. Thanks for all your help!

I would consider the above idea as well. There are plenty of lightly used 997 and 997S models out. Check the inventory at the German Porsche website.

Good luck and enjoy the search!
