Finally there will be a V8 GT to supercede the 928 - let me see - can I predict racerx's reaction?

As to the negative views on the 458 I simply can't understand this. It's an outstanding car IMHO.

Iain, I don't doubt this - the reviews of the 458 have been very good indeed Smiley

BTW where do you typically drive it? Country roads, in town, motorways, on track circuits? I'm curious what the percentages of your usage are Smiley

I've never experienced a Ferrari or a Lamborghini on the Nordschleife - that would be a really interesting comparison - but, Nordschleife times notwithstanding, somehow I just find it hard to believe that anything could 'feel better' around the Nordschleife than a 997.2 GT3/GT3 RS ...

I've driven on other tracks (PDE Silverstone, Magny-Cours club circuit, Hockenheim GP circuit) but the real test of any performance car IMvHO is the Nordschleife. Nothing compares to it ... it really does separate out the best handling/performing cars from the rest Smiley

Thanks RC, great news!! Do you know if they will introduce the Carrera/Carrera S models only in September or will they introduct the 4wd-models at the same time. If later, will they come before the cab-release 6 months later or after the cab?

And also regarding the 4-wd models. Will they be wider or will it be like the rumours have indicated that the S-models get the wide-body independent if its 2wd or 4wdSmiley

Don't get me wrong, the Ferrari is a great car, but in HK we paid about 400,000 EURO for a 458 with basic options. For that price it is too much IMO.

Your view seems to me to be more of an indictment of your country's policy on taxing the importation and usage of luxury cars rather than on the car itself on its own merits as a car.

I just want to make it clear for all folks who want the 458.

Re: Official Information Regarding New 911 (type 991) Introduction and More Thread Closed

Easy, I had no problem taking my 996 to the track. The car held up well and was bullet proof during all day track driving. Sadly, I cannot say the same for the Ferrari's.

Also, there are greater financial considerations tracking a Ferrari compared to a Porsche. Very few Ferrari owners track their cars.

It is! But  it is the only non-V8(amongst the big boys) and the competition is very fierce. They havent won neither of the first two 24 hour races this year, and with the new 458 coming, it is going to be a loooooong year.

Porsche had a 1-2 in GT class  Daytona 24H.

In Dubai 24H the leading Porsche car went out after an accident and others had technical issues.

From your knowledge, do you believe it is a question of engine size? After the 993 GT2 that turbo engines stopped being used, GT3s have always been at a disadvantage in terms of cylinder number and engine size, but still they have to show excellent results.

the only car that during 2010 had a larger engine then porsche was the corvette, all other competitors were 4l cars including porsche, befeore 2010 corvettes didn't race. the problem with the 'vettes is they have huge engines 5.5l and masive amounts of torque witch the aco/fia didn't quite balance with the other cars in the series. And the BMW is alowed to run larger restrictors, for reasons totaly unknown to me

Sorry Reginos: I meant that they did not win the DP class that as we all know the Flying Lizard car was running the 911 engine.

Power is certainly an issue, but it is really a combination of things. Chassis, weight distribution, suspension (although that gets constantly improved, box.

Have you noticed how the famous Porsche reliability is now......less evident?

I think that the car is now getting very "long in the tooth" and is "stretched" in order to be competitive.

This is my suspicion/opinion. I hope that I'm wrong!

You are correct, but no one said anything about "bigger" engines. I said V8.

    I think that F458 has 4,3L for GT2 version.

I'm always amazed how Porsche succeeds to squeeze out additional power and torque from their Boxer engines. Take the 997 GT3 RS as an example, 450 horses without turbo chargers, this was the power output of a bi-turbo charged 996 Turbo S a couple of years ago.

Even look at the Carrera GTS right now, 408 horses out of the non-Mezger 3.8 l Boxer engine and I'm pretty sure that 20-30 horses more, without reliability issues, would be easily possible. Remember the 993 Turbo ? 408 hp with the Mezger derived engine, the 996 Turbo (introduced 2000) had 420 hp.

The Porsche Boxer engines are amazing and they sound absolutely great with the right exhaust. I never understood why so many people, especially from the US, are demanding a V8 engine in the 911 ? For what ? What can a V8 do better right now ?

SpyderIdol, the 458 has a 4.5l engine in its gt2 form, because that is the next engine/restrictor size

I am with RC on this, 911 is a great racecar/car, putting a v8 would be blasfoumus and not racing a 911 in the gt2 class, witch was one of its pioneers, would be really bad for the sport!

I think the gt1 engine is just too old, and that the gt3 incarnation of the new dfi engine will be more then up to the task for the seasons to come, and even if  it proves to be less then enough porsche will get larger restrictors!

Thanks RC.  I will be at the press days at Frankfurt on September 13-14, and am quite excited about the 991 presentation.  Do you plan to be there?  Is anyone else from Rennteam planning to attend?  Might be fun to have a dinner together...

I do agree that a 911 feels great on tracks and I drove my Ruf GT2 at the ring a lot, but I actually found that I enjoyed my Nissan GTR and M3 CSL more on the 'ring. The GT2 (630PS, part-carbon-bodied) always felt like it was about to kill me and was not a car that was easy to control once the back stepped out, which meant that whereas I was happy to drive 100% at the various GP circuits, at the ring I always drove 90-95% maximum.

By contrast the CSL and GTR could be driven 100% safe in the knowledge that when oversteer arrived it could be far more easily corrected or even held for prolongued slides (especially in the CSL).

Wet laps in the CSL were fun, in the GT2 terrifying...... :)

At Silverstone, Spa, Donington, Brands etc though the GT2 in the dry was incredible.

Absolutely correct. Surprisingly, many people seem to demand a new shape and new engines but maybe these are not the people who would actually buy one. Smiley

Even if the Cayenne sells better than the 911, the 911 is the classic Porsche and Porsche needs to be careful how they change the 911. The other models profit from this iconic position of the 911 in the model range.

I would love to be there but I can't. Summer vacation ends and school starts, this is actually the worst time for me (and very likely others in Germany) to get away from home for a day or two. Smiley

First off, a big and grateful thank you to our very own RC for your valuable insight, tireless contributions and brilliant pointers. I'm planning to be in Frankfurt for the IAA. It's just a few days after my birthday and I'm heading there specifically to swarm/stalk the Porsche stand. Can anyone get me Porsche-sponsored tickets? :D Who else will be there? I second the meet-up/dinner idea. rulesdontapply

I have said that all along. A 911 is a short wheelbase, rear-engined car with the 901 iconic profile. The 991, unfortunately, violates at least one of the requirements - longer wheelbase.

Will Porsche continue to offer the traditional manual transmission or do they plan to to take the Ferrari/Lambo route and kill it for good ? Smiley

PDK 2 will also be highly improved but as far as I heard, manual will be still available, at least for the Carrera models.

Lots of things happen in a 24h race but the problem with the Flying Lizard car (flat6-powered) was a ruptured radiator due to an incursion off-track by the team owner during a traffic incident. That car was the fastest machine on-track and if Seth stayed managing instead of driving it could possibly have won.
