Need help: Replacement RS3 (old) - RS3 (new)?

My fellow rennteamers, I need some help. Smiley

In our family we use a first generation (8PA) Audi RS3, which is mostly driven as a daily commuter by my parents. From time to time this car is also used by me and my family.

What would you say, does it make sense to replace this car with the current model RS3 (8VA)?

    Some facts:
The car is relatively low in mileage. Of course there will be a substantial loss in value, when replacing such a car against the new model, but that would not be a problem. I know that you cannot order the RS3 anymore, but there are still cars available. My main criticism concerning the old model is that it is relatively front heavy. Of course it is not as agile as some of it's main competitors, but as the RS3 is used for city traffic and some medium distance travelling, handling is not the main focus. Nevertheless I would appreciate a more agile car, but I could not drive the new RS3 yet.
Alternatives maybe would be the RS Q3 with the identical engine as the old RS3 and the current S3, which is relatively close in powerfigure after the last model change, but this one is only a four cylinder. All other S/RS-derivatives are no choice, since there is a limit for the maximum size. So that rules out some other pretty nice cars as Mercedes C400 or Macan Turbo for example, which were in consideration at the very beginning.
So a must is the compact (but not too small) size, four doors, four wheel drive (my parents insist on that) and as much cylinders as possible. The latter is the knockout for all compact AMG-models (and as well for the Audi S3, though I like this one), but I'm not the biggest fan of the small AMGs anyway, since I find the ratio maximum horsepower - displacement a bit on the unhealthy side and find those small models a bit crude. Of course all this still leaves some room for the facelifted BMW M135i.

Enough for the moment, I hope you can help me with our "problem". Smiley

While I haven't driven either, several reviewers preferred the new AWD Golf R to the RS3.  And the new Ford Focus RS might be interesting to you.

If they have the need for speed why not look at the mercedes gla45 amg. Be sure to get the wing and the delimiter.kiss there is nothing faster in that class. The bmw 1 series optics might bore them, it's a tough call to replace a rs3.

Re: Need help: Replacement RS3 (old) - RS3 (new)?

driven the a45 amg 3 month ago and last week the new RS3 - the RS3 wins hands down. The sound the power delivery the agile driving all imho better than in the amg.

Hi Grant, I had the new Golf R for a weekend. One of the most boring cars I have ever driven. Smiley

My experience as well, as far as the A45 is concerned. Did you drive the old RS3 as well?

Re: Need help: Replacement RS3 (old) - RS3 (new)?

I was tempted to buy an S3 but the facelift is around the corner.

I don't like the A45 AMG. And when you start comparing the RS3 and the S3, the latter starts to make more sense. The RS3 is a bit too much if you ask me, specially for city driving. I've never driven one (RS3) though, so I can't help you much.

The M135i Xdrive has it all (6 cylinder and 4WD) but I just hate the design and the interior is really cheap.

If it was my money, I'd wait for the S3 facelift.

Re: Need help: Replacement RS3 (old) - RS3 (new)?

I've been driving a few days with the brand new Mercedes GLA AMG 45 (381hp) and I must say that I'm very impressed by this car!

This AMG was fully equipped incl. Sportseats, great ride, fantastic engine/ gearbox connection, firm but still quite comfty setup, great engine sound...

I'd go for that car any seconds!

Too bad - maybe the Ford RS is worth a test drive?

An M2 might be an option unless you specifically need a hatch?

I have an A45 as my daily and family driver. The car is an event every time I use it: the noise and feedback with the typical Mercedes quality makes it unique. Haven't driven the RS3, so cannot compare. The A45 is a real Q car, looks like a plain A220 CDI with the AMG pack... until it starts up.

M2 is no alternative since it has only three doors, I'm afraid. Smiley

Re: Need help: Replacement RS3 (old) - RS3 (new)?

    Stefan,

Test drive of new RS3 is a must I am affraid since it is not drive dynamics wise the best car in its class. Yes, engine is unique, very powerfull and almost charismatic. But, engine is also RS3s single most important item.

New A45 or GLA45 could be interesting for you as well. Again, try to arrange test drive.

Btw, I am assuming that DCT is a must?

Re: Need help: Replacement RS3 (old) - RS3 (new)?

Hi Kreso, to be honest, I was waiting for your input. indecision

Yes, DCT or autotranny is a must. So what you say about the new RS3 confirms what I was thinking: the changes between Mk 1 and Mk 2 might be not enough to justify a swap, we can keep the older car, which hasn't that many kilometres on the odometer anyway. So we should better concentrate on competitors like M135i (I like this one and testdrive is on its way) or GLA45, though the latter being a fourcylinder only and replace another car, while keeping the RS3.

    Thanks for your help. kiss

Keep the car or get a RS Q3.

The new VW R400 might be an option. Faster than any of the competitors! Will have 420HP

Interesting, indeed but limited edition (difficult to get) and for around 50k EUR.

His parents should stick to their RS3 or get a SQ3 (saw one yesterday parked in our neighborhood, in red, very nice).

SQ3 is a nice and quick package. Just can't get over that fat single exhaust. What were they thinking.

The exhaust looks OK in my book but I'm not a fan of that quattro lettering in the lower part of the front bumper. A bit over the top in my opinion.

It's called RS Q3 and has a petrol engine compared to the SQ5.

I have owned one since 2 years and I am very happy with the car. No issues, nice sound, balanced suspension setup, good brakes and torquey, characterful engine. Even drove it for 8 laps at Spa. Interior quality good, enough space for me, did not miss any beat so far.

Drove a A45 AMG for two hours on country roads around the Ring last year. Reminded me on my old EVO VI, bit boy racerish, novelty wore off after two hours. Harsh suspension, exhaust crackles fun in the beginning, after a while going on your nerves, much smaller inside vs. RS Q3.

Re: Need help: Replacement RS3 (old) - RS3 (new)?

Rossi I think I can help a bit here. I was recently looking for a small hatch for us to use as a city car, and to put roof racks on so we can transport our bikes when my little boy and I want to go ride on trails etc. The main contenders were RS3, A45 and M135i. We also considered GLA45 and RSQ3. I test drove all of them except RSQ3 as the reviews were not very positive. In the end it came down to RS3 and M135i (A45 was just too frantic and boy racer. I have other cars that are more hardcore so I don't need that!). RS3 is just intoxicating with the 5 cylinder sound, but in the end I found the car to be a bit boring for my liking, and the throttle and gear shifts were just too lazy unless you put it into sports mode. It has such tremendous grip that it really is a point and shoot car in the twisties, and it under steered more than the BMW at the limit. The BMW is much more fun as you are constantly aware of the limit of grip. Sure the interior is boring as hell (I've had the pre update 135i too a couple of years ago) especially compared to the beautiful RS3 interior, but when I'm driving I don't really notice the interior. My wife has even stopped using her sedan and been using the M135i exclusively since we bought it. We both love it!

Re: Need help: Replacement RS3 (old) - RS3 (new)?

Actually, I find the M135i boring, had one for a test-drive before I chose the Mini JCW and didn't really like it. Great engine and everything but the boring interior made me cry for help. angry I cannot sit in a car and drive it if don't feel good while doing it, BMW urgently needs to update their interiors.

Boring interior yes, but prefer how the MINI drives over it?

    WAY:

No but the Mini is smaller and pretty "cheap" (lease cost is ridiculously low, incl. full coverage insurance).

I wouldn't have gotten the Mini either if it wasn't for my mother and her "needs". My 991 GTS is a perfect daily driver, I don't need another one but I use the Mini pretty often because it is just easier for various (daily) tasks.
