    ok, looking forward to it, however, the 991 T already was "only" a base Carrera with some "S" parts - again, if and when the "992 T" would be dealt with in same Motorsport Team as the GT3, then, this would be a game changer like the 981 Spyder and the 718 Spyder...wink

    I wouldn’t expect the 992 T - whether or not it gets the 9A2 NA 4.0L - to be a Motorsport division car.

    I would expect it to be the “enthusiast” 992 in the sub GT3 bracket. Not sure where the rumored sport classic would fit.

    Sport Classic seems redundant with the 50th Anniversary Carrera RS, but maybe there will be some surprises...

    Porsche’s decision to build a whole new, naturally-aspirated flat-six for the 718 Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder siblings raised many eyebrows. Yes, the 4.0-litre ‘9A2 Evo’ engine (below) may be related to the turbocharged ‘9A2’ used in the 911 Carrera models, but there’s precious little carryover. 

    Stuttgart has lobbed a considerable amount of money at the thing, so it wasn’t a shock to see the unit appear in the rejuvenated 718 Cayman and Boxster GTS. Nor should we be surprised that Porsche is going to keep it in production for as long as possible, which will help the investment be recouped. It will stick around for longer than you might have expected, though.

    Speaking to Car Throttle at the launch of the 718 GTS siblings, vice president of 911 and 718 product lines Dr Frank Walliser gave us some idea of the engine’s future. We know it already complies with Euro 6DG-Temp emissions rules - helped by the use of cylinder shut-off technology and petrol particulate filters - which will take 9A2 Evo to January 2021. But, it’s set to satisfy the incoming ‘AP’ legislation also.

    “AP comes and has to be fulfilled…AP is the end of [Euro 6-DG-] Temp, that should last until end of [20]23,” Walliser said, adding, “Then we hope for three years of silence, and then we expect a small improvement in the AP and then the next big move will come in [20]26, Euro 7.”

    If you’re struggling to wrap your head around all those different rating codes, what you need to know is this - the engine will live on until 2023 at least, and probably 2026. Euro 7 is still an unknown at this stage, so it’s tricky to predict whether or not the flat-six could survive past that point.

    Will that be the time of the Cayman and Boxster’s long-rumoured switch to electric power only? Walliser wouldn’t give any strong hints either way. “The question is how quick will the markets develop. Is it feasible? Will it be still a cool car? This is what we have to consider - how can we keep the spirit of the car; the soul of the car.”

    Porsche’s first foray into the world of EVs does prove it could work, Walliser reckons. “Taycan showed we can make electric cars that keep the Porsche feeling, the Porsche soul. They drive like a Porsche, they feel like a Porsche,” he said, adding, “If we could bring something like that to a sports car…why not. In these days we have to look at all the alternatives - we have to look at hybrids, we have to look at full electric cars, at normally-aspirated engines.” 

    It’s that final point which is key - against all odds, Porsche will be keeping natural-aspiration going long after most rivals call it quits. “[In the] year 2020 [Porsche is] offering a 4.0-litre normally aspirated engine, so it gives us a USP. We are also selling emotions and doing things that are not expected.”

    Porsche's new exhaust has saved the 9,000rpm flat-six

    Porsche launched the 911 Speedster this week, effectively a swansong for the old-gen 911 and with the 991.2 GT3’s howling 4.0-litre flat-six sitting pride of place in its rump.

    It’s a stupendous engine, revving to 9,000rpm and making one of the very greatest noises on earth as it does so. As a reminder that naturally aspirated engines are often more fun than turbos, it’s as stark as they come.

    Happily, Andreas Preuninger – head of Porsche’s GT-badged cars – all but confirmed this isn’t the engine’s swansong, with much of the thanks going to a clever new exhaust system. It incorporates a particulate filter, to lower the car’s emissions, but thanks to the fastidiousness of Porsche’s engineers it’s somehow gained 10bhp and lost 10kg, too.

    “This is what happens when you push very good engineers to the limit,” Preuninger tells us. “It has very thin steel sheet soldering which is super light, and losing 10 kilos at the back end of the car – down low – is something you really feel.

    “You don’t lose a lot of sound either. This car is a little more well behaved, but it has a more cultured sound, which is okay for a Speedster. It fits the times were living in at the moment a little better.

    “The valving in the exhaust is electrically controlled, so it’s continuously moving. We are the only ones with an electric system that can take the heat of an exhaust. If you control the flaps mechanically the sports exhaust is either on or off.”

    So, the soundtrack is still pretty exceptional, and friendlier emissions effectively futureproof this engine, too. So surely the next GT3 models can duck out of turbocharging, too.

    “We have saved this beautiful creature for the future,” says Preuninger, who wouldn’t be drawn on where we’ll actually see the 4.0-litre flat-six next. “We are trying to keep the flame alive as long as possible. We think the high-revving naturally aspirated engine is an amazing thing that needs saving.”

    We couldn’t agree more...

    ...while the GT4 4.0 engine is already being used by the Boxster GTS 4.0 and Cayman GTS 4.0 and could also appear in a future 992 Carerra GTS 4.0 for example... Smiley

    As we look forward to more details of the 992 GT3, it’s worth reflecting on the 991 Speedster’s engine specifications...

    That's quite the rear diffuser the GT3 is sporting.  Looks like the rear fascia is heavily revised from that found on the sport design or the latest aero iteration on the 992 Carrera S.
