    SL65 Stolen

This was in an Australian Newspaper today. (www.smh.com.au)

Hope this doesn't happen to your SL65 Mike S!

The owner of a luxury convertible worth almost $500,000 put up a fight before two masked men stole the car in Sydney's eastern suburbs last night.

The 49-year-old had just got out of his car at his Rose Bay home about 9.15pm (AEST) when two men wearing balaclavas approached him, police said.

When the bandits climbed into the car - a 2003-model black Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG two-door coupe with registration "MERC" - the owner dragged one of them back out.

The other bandit threatened the owner, who then retreated, and the car was driven away.

Police said the car was last seen heading towards the Sydney CBD.

No weapons were produced during the incident and the car's owner was not injured.

Mercedes-Benz's website describes the SL65 as the "most powerful roadster in the world" and lists a retail price of $455,900.

On July 29, four masked men stole a similar vehicle from its owner at his Vaucluse home.

Police have said criminals seek high-powered luxury cars to use in other offences, and have warned owners of luxury vehicles to be wary when coming home late at night.

    Re: SL65 Stolen

    A couple of thoughts:

    1. If the vehicle had keyless go then there is no key in the ignition, just a card in the owners wallet (is that right?) So when the owner leaves the vehicle the theives shouldn't be able to drive off? Is that correct?

    2. Isn't it possible with cars like this to track them via GPS or deactivate the engine remotely?

Curious to hear some other methods to avoid such a situation. And if all else fails, keep a taser, pepper spray, gun in your glove compartment lol

    Re: SL65 Stolen

Keyless go's problem is most of guys w/SL/CL65 use this $200K car as their "beater car" where office bldg garage/restaurant valets often need a normal key for car...so the card is just a cool feature to show naive chicks, etc.

IMO, if one lives in carjacking-prone area, that's part of cost-of-living/risk of choosing to live in those places ...and who wants a stolen car back anyway?....that's one of the reasons to insure the car.....

    Re: SL65 Stolen

I think Mick Doohan (500cc champion) got one of the first SL65's in Austalia...

My memory is very vague....but i think it was around late '03?

(Also could it be a special import?)

i was thinking the exact same thing, maybe a typing error, I think they were talking about a 55, seesh 450k(seems australia's vehicle prices are even worse than here!) as far as i know the SL65 was only released last year?

    Re: SL65 Stolen

But the price is correct, there was one in my dealers showroom early this year that was awaiting its owners pickup and the salesman told me it cost $480k Aussie which is around $370 USD. Pagani Zonda cost like 1.1M or something.

Well, the good news is: As soon as the thugs drive into a corner with that thing they're FUBARed!
They need a straight road for a safe getaway, thats for sure.

(Sorry Mike...just cant forget how ridiculously lousy the car performed in TopGear.)

Dont understand that the GPS didn't track them down easily.
In out neck of the woods it's compulsory for car over 100K I believe.

    strange no GPS

..given they are so affordable - a GPS manufacturer here licences our detailed street maps and software (see www.findmap.com.au) for just such a tracking scenario and box also has door/ignition control so wait until it's in the right place, get police ready and press STOP.

You don't even need a bureau service, just install the software on your own desktop and connect via server which connects with the car and that's IT - you're connected, tracking and in control.

Mobile comms is taken care of with standard cell/mobile SIM card (GPRS network is best) so cheap-as-chips to run.

Strange such high dollar cars don't make a lousy $1K'ish investment and put a box into their car given the technology is so readily available and affordable.

I guess these owners just need their dealer advising them a little better and us shouting a little louder in the car dealers ears.

I know we've got good interest from the Bentley people for example, should go up the road to M-B to make sure they know as well!

    Alex.
