    Bmw Z4 sdrive 23i

    Fellow renteamers,

I would like to ask for your opinion on the Z4.

I know that the Boxster is the better car, but it's also the most expensive of the two. So, if you have any experience  with the z4, or if you own one, could you please share with us your opinion?

    Thanks in advance.  Smiley

    Re: Bmw Z4 sdrive 23i

If you talk about the latest model (E89 production started in 2009), the one with a metal retractable roof, I own one since Sept 2009 (Model Year 2010).

It's the 2.3i, manual. It's a great daily car and a great cruiser. It is not however a sport car. The Boxster is twice the car. I heard that the biturbo 3 liter Z4 is better but I highly doubt that. The 6cyl 23i is not in production anymore, it was replaced with the 28i (2l turbo, 4 cyl). I recommend getting the 28i instead of the 23i because the torque of the 23i it's pathetic. Also make sure you have FRONT parking sensors. It's a must because of the long bonnet of the car.

The car was trouble free. If you want to know more, please ask.

I'm indeed talking about the latest one, with the folding hard-top.

I was thinking about buying a 23i off the lot (or a slightly used one, at great discount) as the z4 doesn't hold its value very well I'm afraid.

As I'm not looking at buying a new one, it will be extremely difficult to find a 28i as this model is not yet available at dealers. Maybe I should wait though.

The torque figure seems to be a problem; with 250NM, it's worst than on golf GTI.

    Quick questions:

How is the driving experience with that long bonnet? Is that an inconvenience?

How is the suspension setting? the M sport suspension is a must or not?

How is the engine? I would guess that it's silky smooth but too linear.

Is it fun or not ?

    Thanks again. Yves.

    Re: Bmw Z4 sdrive 23i

How is the driving experience with that long bonnet? Is that an inconvenience?

Yes, it is. You must have front parking sensors to feel comfortable, especially in tight spaces (parking). It is a very "detached" experience. It is great if you just sit back and cruise but if you would like to drive sporty and aggressive you don't feel connected to the road like in a Boxster.

How is the suspension setting? the M sport suspension is a must or not?

I have the standard suspension and I hate it. It is too soft and wobbly. If I would buy another car I would select the adaptive suspension (a must).

How is the engine? I would guess that it's silky smooth but too linear.

The engine is OK, except the lack of torque on low rpms. Above 5000rpms is fine. Engine sound is decent. I like linear power delivery.

Is it fun or not ?

The car is a cruiser so it is fun but a different kind of fun. You get your girl and drive slower with the top off in a relax manner and you end up having a really nice time. If you want to go in to "attack/qualifying" mode, forget it. Personally I don't believe that 3.5i will be better because at that price is very close to the Boxster so it makes NO sense to me to get 3.5i instead, The 2.3i/2.8i heavy optioned is half of the price of a Boxster S (heavy optioned too).

It makes sense to get the Z4 instead of the Boxster if you really need the metal retractable roof instead of the cloth one (in extreme climates OR if you want to use the car all year on a daily base).

Anyway, if you want a cheap cruising roadster with a metal retractable roof, the Z4 2.3i it's a great choice.

If you want a sportier roadster I would strongly suggest you to get the new 2.8i or the old 3.0i.

If you want a true sport car get the Boxster S.

    Re: Bmw Z4 sdrive 23i

I'd rather get the 1 M Coupe, you can't get more sports car for less money and slightly used cars are already available for under 50k EUR. If you want a Cab, I know you will hate me but I would get the new Camaro Cab with V8 and over 400 horses. Not really the finest Cab out there but it has an amazing engine and it is pretty cheap.

    Re: Bmw Z4 sdrive 23i

@Pentium: thank you very much for all your answers Smiley  they are all very helpful. I have the confirmation that the z4 is not the car for me. I need more $ to buy an entry level sports car (like a boxster or cayman).

@RC: I understand your point but a 2010 z4 23i starts at 35k and I don't have 50K to spend on a car (not yet  Smiley). That said, I do agree with you. For a sports car, the M1 is the best of the bunch.

The fact is that it's near impossible to have a decent sports car for under, let's say, 40-50K.

That's the problem I'm confronted with, to be honest.

I have to buy a car next year (for fiscal reasons), and the car can't be older than 2 years. Unfortunatly, a 2010 boxster is way over 35K.

At first, I was looking at a Golf GTI or the equivallent scirocco. It's around 30K. I took a test drive of one, but my hopes were too high. It's a great car, don't get me wrong, but it's not a sports car for sure. In addition, my girl friend hates the look of it. She truly thinks it's a "johnny's car" (aka a car tuned with some crappy lights and big spoilers). She said she would never ride with me if I buy a GTI; she'd be too ashamed Smiley Smiley

As my budget is 35K (I already stretch it from 30K), I guess I will have to buy some BMW 3 series. As I said, it's useless to try to buy a sports car at this price level.

    Re: Bmw Z4 sdrive 23i

My opinion is that if you buy an inconvenient car (2 seats, low, limited visibility etc) the only justification would be if it had superior dynamics. The Z4 doesn't have the dynamics so you will end up with an impractical car purely for the style. In that case you'd better get a stylish 2+2 Coupe which will be more practical at least.

How about the renault megane 250 cup? but it can be seen as  a "johnny's car" too

    Re: Bmw Z4 sdrive 23i

    Audi TTS...?

[Edit: obviously the direct link to an offer on Audi´s website doesn´t work. One can find the above model starting at 32 thousand Euros in Germany directly from the dealer]

    Re: Bmw Z4 sdrive 23i

If you can fit in it, buy a Mazda MX5 and install a supercharger later ;) But make sure you pick one with the Recaro leather seats.

    Re: Bmw Z4 sdrive 23i

Oh, and it should have the limited slip rear differential too. And while we're at it, a Boxster S or a Cayman S need the rear diff too.

Good idea.  Comes with LSD, Recaros and Brembos as standard, and goes like a bat out of hell with a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine. BTW what's a "johnny's car"?  (not familiar with the term, but if it means what I think it does, stop worrying so much about what other people think!).  Smiley

One more thing: I suspect your girlfriend may like the Mini Cooper S...

    Re: Bmw Z4 sdrive 23i

Cant give you any opinion of the new Z4. But I own a 2008 Z4 2.0i engine for arround 2 years now.... Its probably the BEST buy I have ever done. Love how it goes, and never had any problems (already have done 15.000kms, bought it with 30.000kms).

it only has 150bhp, but has a nice sound, and above 4.000rpm it does perform great.  Mine is equipped with the M seats and M suspension.

Try and check prices in some months, Z4 havereally gone down in price, specially the first model. I am sure there are good prices for second hand latest Z4.

Regarding the long bonnet, in some days you will get used to it. Parking in reverse, its more than easy. The suspension is a must. One of my best friends recently purchased another 2.0i but without the sport suspension, and clearly you feel it when having some fun.

get the Z4 over any other car, Golf gti, Scirocco, mx5, etc. The Z4 is the best car in its class and price range. No need to get a powerfull engine to have fun in the Z4 !! Trust me !!. Plus fuel consumption in mine is more than good. Right now is 7.9l/100kms. With 55€ I can manage cover arround 500-530kms of range. Using all the tank, including reserve.indecision
