    A few questions about brakes

    1) Does anybody know the unsprung weight of one PCCB ceramic brake disc?

    2) How much is the weight of a normal 997S brake disc (i.e. from the 996 Turbo)?

    3) (Very old question - sorry about that - but important to know all the same) Why does a 987S get the power-boosted 996 Turbo brake but not the standard 997 Carrera which costs so much more?

    Grateful for your answers...Thx

Re: A few questions about brakes

    1) i recall reading somewhere abt PCCBs saving around 22lbs (roughly 50% fm big reds).

    2) if (1) true, big reds would weigh in around 44lbs (set of 4). 997S brakes are the same as 996 turbo brakes.

    3) probably a marketing thing...

Re: A few questions about brakes

The PCCB has reduced the weight of the braking system for the new 911 by 14 kilograms (31Ibs.).

Re: A few questions about brakes

Thanks guys. I was watching the Top Gear 997S vs AMV8 vs M6 head to head again last night. One of the presenters, Richard Hammond, said (I'm paraphrasing here) that the combined weight of all 4 PCCB brake discs is equal to one of the brake discs of the 996 Turbo.

That just got me thinking...hence the questions I posed above.

Re: A few questions about brakes

I would really recommend testdriving the PCCB. I AM a believer now and will NEVER EVER order a car without them. I don't like the price tag though.

Re: A few questions about brakes

Before ordering a 997S, I test-drove one with the PCCB's. Remarkable braking, but I just could not afford the US dollar 8,150 additional cost (down from about US dollar 8,850 - I think - option price for the 2005 model year). While the salesman didn't think they were worth it, I would have gotten them in a heartbeat if I could have afforded to do so.

Formula One cars are supposed to be switching to ceramic composite brakes for 2006, as they are better than the existing fiber composite ones. I wonder if they're buying from the same supplier Porsche uses? If so, it's a big vote of confidence in the PCCB's as being better than the fiber composite brakes.

Re: A few questions about brakes

Hopefully they can continue to lower the cost. $8000 is really steep.....

Re: A few questions about brakes

You're right Chili. $8k is certainly too steep a price. I guess I wonder what kind of production volume it would take to allow Porsche to bring the price down to the $2-3K range, and if that's even possible. If it is, I wonder when Porsche will make it standard equipment on the S.
