    Chevy - It runs deep

Unbelievable Smiley.  How could they miss this in the assembly line is beyond my understanding.

This following the optional buyback of all the long-awaited Volts due to fire risk.

GM lost the plot at least 30 years ago, the problem is that no one has told them yet. Yes, their sales have been stronger post-bailout, but the root problem of not making desirable or reliable cars still exists. The bailout was akin to throwing them one of those floating-noodle things as they head over Niagara Falls.

I'm afraid we may be looking at another Kodak at some point in the near future.

Re: Chevy - It runs deep

    That's deplorable.

It's not like they missed tightening a nut or forgot to install an option. It's a goddamn brake pad! The calipers come loaded from the supplier so it had to go through THREE quality control checks (Supplier QC, Assembly Line Worker, Final QC) and it was missed by each and every one of those gates.

Re: Chevy - It runs deep

GM probably went through the risk management assessment and decided to call a recall on this one.  A standard procedure.

I wonder if the assessment included reputation damage cost included.  Quite an embarrassing outcome.

Re: Chevy - It runs deep

Beyond comprehension why the human beings at GM could do that. Its even dumber than some of the stuff with Britsh Leyland, Yugos and Ladas. Quality can be forgotten when the company is government backed.

Re: Chevy - It runs deep

Unfortunately this "mess" also affects german (and GM owned) car manufacturer Opel with the Ampera (basically a Volt with a different body).

Opel seems to be in a bad shape already, the Ampera would have been a nice addition to the product portfolio.

Not true at all! Renault is government owned and their cars are fine. Ladas may not have high quality fit and finish but their sturdiness rivals that of main battle tanks! British Layland on the other hand is a sad story of mismanagement and complacency. Smiley

"What Car ?" place Renault very low on the reliability list Smiley

I would never know from first hand, fortunately as I never had any interest in French cars.

    RENAULT
    30th out of 32

    Last year’s position 29th out of 30
    Cars needing repair work 45%
    Average repair cost £227
    Star model Clio (’05-’09)
The humble Clio (’05-’09) turned in Renault’s best performance, with 20 cars per 100 requiring attention. Unfortunately this was a long way ahead of the rest of the range, as the next-closest car was the older Clio
(’98-’05) with 32 faults per 100 cars. The majority of models score just one out of five for reliability; electrical gremlins accounted for 43% of failures.

I have friends with Renaults and they are all very happy with them. On the other hand, people I know with VWs are about to burn the damn things down!

    VW is not perfect

    VOLKSWAGEN
    19th out of 32

    Last year’s position 20th out of 30
    Cars needing repair work 27%
    Average repair cost £324
    Star models Beetle (’00-)/Lupo (’99-’05)
Volkswagen rarely does well in our reliability surveys, and this year is no exception. Its best model managed 21 failures per 100 cars, good enough for a four-star rating, but the Sharan (’00-) suffered 41 breakdowns per 100 cars, while the Touareg (’03-) was affected by 32 faults per 100. The Golf (’04-’08) had 24 faults per 100 cars.

But far better than Renault or Alfa Romeo

    ALFA ROMEO
    31st out of 32

    Last year’s position 28th out of 30
    Cars needing repair work 47%
    Average repair cost £420
    Star model 166 (’99-’05)
Alfa has a poor track record in our reliability surveys. This year its worst model, the GTV (’96-’03), recorded a shocking 77 failures per 100 cars, with the GT (’05-) just behind at 68 per 100. Just under a third of all Alfa failures were down to the axles and suspension, with engine faults the next biggest issue – causing more than 15% of problems.

Bottom place for Land Rover Smiley

    LAND ROVER
    32nd out of 32

    Last year’s position 30th out of 30
    Cars needing repair work 53%
    Average repair cost £412
    Star model Freelander (’03-’06)
Land Rover appears doomed to remain last in our survey, having been bottom for the past eight years. The Range Rover (’02-) edged out the Discovery (’98-’04) to record Land Rover’s worst result, with 59 out of 100 cars failing. The Range Rover also recorded the highest repair bill, at £7126. Even the Freelander (’03-’06) could muster only two stars.
