Re: Acceleration Data Audi A8 W12

Markus, how does the W12 compare to the AMG 55/63 cars above 200 km/h?

Actually, my gut feeling tells me that the new S-class has a similar - if not slightly better - finish / material selection than the A8. Mercedes has improved quality strandards quite a lot in case of the new S-class

    Absolutely agree....

In past 12 mos, have had new S550, SL65, CL550 and CL600....drove each anywhere from 1K-5K mis before trade-in (curr have CL600)...would observe fit/finish/elegance of design/ergonomics are absolutely best in world today....and not even one glitch/technical flaw/reliability issue (despite bleeding-edge tech, esp in CL and S-Class)....and have various colleagues who are also jaded, every 6-12 mos buyers of new MB/F who share similar experiences....

BTW, our EU pals may be amused that it's more difficult for jaded F/MB buyers in SF/Greenwich to get an early CL63 (or S63) w/030 than it was to get an early, @MSRP 599....my MB dealer is same dealer that many of the early 599 guys on SF Peninsula use...and F was able to send 3-4 599s in first batch to FoSF, but MB is only able to send one CL63 (Apr build) to the key SF Peninsula MB dealer.....w/uncertainty re: availabilty of 030 in early builds (?shortage of bespoke-spec 20" tires and ltwt wheels) and no sense of when this dealer will get next CL63...or how many copies in next build cycle....

Are CL63 trading at substantial premia in the US then? The 599 is still priced way above the MSRP in the US, right?

P.S.: I would still argue that retaining the CL600 until the CL65 will be available (thus leaving out the CL63) would be my personal MB strategy if I were you Both, CL600 and CL65 are extremely nice cars The CL63 might be more of a compromise (based on what I read to date). However, I still need to see my MB dealer in order to arrange for a test drive.

Good question... I would love to find out. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to do a test yet.

P.S.: I have seen one test of the S65 (612hp). The car did 0-250 in around 22s However, the gap between a S63 and a S65 is huge. S63 and W12 should deliver pretty similar performance above 200kph I would guess.

Would be interesting to compare. Btw, is yours delimited? How fast does the gearing actually allow it to go?

My car is still limited to 250kph (actually its more like 260kph, based on my test runs). Personally, I think that a 2t limousine is not the appropriate car for 300kph runs. 250kph is fast enough for such heavy cars. Higher speeds should be reserved to true sports cars

The SWB version (with shorter gear ratios) nearly reaches the rev limiter at top speed (maybe there is another reserve of 100revs/min left at top speed).

The shorter gearing (compared to S63) might indeed support high-speed acceleration. However, the S63 has 7 gears which might compensate the gearing effect...

Don't know... Feels kind of nice doing 300 km/h in an E class .

Depends how far up in the Ponzi scheme you are...
