Where's a good place to rent a 996 to take on the Ring?

I rented a 996 once from Avis at the Frankfurt airport. I am curious if one can be rented in Cologne (Koln) and driven legally (and insured) on the Nurburgring?

Any cost estimates for a week in the Summer?

    Thanks!

No, all major rental car companies forbid driving on the Nuerburgring Nordschleife or any other track.
If you don't care about this rule and you're involved in an accident, you have to pay for all damages. Not recommended.
The only (legal) way to rent a car for the track are race car rentals. They usually rent cars to professional race car drivers with a valid international license. Not really recommended either because you get a real race car, rental fees are very high and because you have no insurance either.

I'm afraid there is no (legal) way how to rent a car and drive it on the Nordschleife.

RC - That's a shame , but thanks for the honest answer...

Re: Where's a good place to rent a 996 to take on the Ring?

Several board members have mentioned that they picked up their new cars at the factory and driven them on the Ring. Would these owner be insured if they had an accident on the Ring? What if I buy a used Porsche in Germany - can I insure it for the Ring before shipping it back to the states (or is any track excluded from the insurance)?

Although the Ring is actually a public street, insurance doesn't pay if you wreck your car. The whole situation with the Nordschleife is a little bit tricky: it is a public street with speed limit(!), maximum speed is actually 130 kph with different portions of lower speed limits. Now of course you won't see a police man with a radar gun on the Nordschleife but if you drive faster than the legal speed limit, your insurance has the best excuse not to pay. And it isn't difficult for the police and experts to find out how fast you were when you wrecked your car. Usually the insurances exclude Nuerburging driving in their contracts (the small print...) and rental companies do that anyway, especially the large ones.
Track racing is always at your own risk in Germany, with one exception: driver ed events which are officially labeled as such (for example the Porsche Driving School).
I'm afraid the people who pick up their new Porsche at the factory and drive it to the Ring don't know what they do, they maybe think their car is insured. It isn't. And even worse: if somebody else hits you, you very likely have to pay your cost yourself too because of "hit and run" incidents or the failure to prove who's fault it was. They don't happen often but there is a risk. One reason why I avoid tracks like hell when it is "open driving day". All the crazy guys from the neighborhood in their compacts are on the track and driving like hell. I prefer controlled track events with semi-pro drivers.

Re: Where's a good place to rent a 996 to take on the Ring?

Thanks again for the info, RC. Does Porsche Driving School have an event at the Ring (Nordschleife)?

Re: Where's a good place to rent a 996 to take on the Ring?

last year yes ....and advanced course in the nordschleife ....but i konw that your car is not covered by insurance too.
in Italy the Porsche driving school gives their cars (all new 996 my 2002 )to drive.
if you wont ,you can use your own car ,but first you must sign a legal paper that exclude all type of insurance .

i went to the Ring last year with my 996 ,it' s fantastic ,but terrificant also.
in the mornig a motorbiker died (wet condition) and in the afternoon an other died ......
I'll return 4 sure in late august ,but ,4 me ,it's impossible to drive fast there,it's too dangerous 4 me ,my car ,and my codriver .
i prefer drive fast (on my poor limits) in serious FIA approved tracks like monza, mugello, imola etc.
in the nordschleife bikes and cars run toghether....and both tipes of "drivers" are crazy.

a pic of my car in the Ring....
