    Clear Bra Full Hood?

I'm talking to an installer for Clear Bra on a 997 and he says that with 3M you cannot cover the full hood since 3M doesn't have a piece which is wide enough and he suggests doing one third to match the front fenders above the lights. Has anyone done the full hood on a 997 with 3M clear bra?

    Re: Clear Bra Full Hood?

I was planning on the whole hood and they never said that it wasn't doable. It was just going to be more expensive.

    Re: Clear Bra Full Hood?

Full hood should not be any problem but the film must not be 3M.

    Re: Clear Bra Full Hood?

Any one heard or have installed or have any experience with the clear bra product from this company in the link below?

    Re: Clear Bra Full Hood?

The only issue I can think of (other than cost and looks) is you will have to go with an installer that uses bulk film, not a kit. I don't know whether the bulk film comes in widths wide enough to cover the hood all the way back, as it gets wider as you go back toward the windshield. Personally, the "orange peel"--wrinkle look of the film would be a major turn off as far as covering the entire hood goes.

BTW, you cover the entire hood, then what about the tops of the fenders, and then the roof. Why not bubble wrap the entire car You gotta stop somewhere.

    Re: Clear Bra Full Hood?

Covering the full hood is a good idea. I've been lucky that the covering on the bumper and bottom 1/3 of the hoods on my CS & C2S have prevented me from a single chip but think I may do the whole hood on my next cars. I prefer the look of 3M over other products, on my silver 997 and red CS it is impossible to tell the film is on the car if you didn't see the line on the hood & fenders. But I have heard the same thing about the way the rolls of 3M come, not being wide enough to do the whole hood in 1 piece so you may want to try another manufacturer. Or you could still use 3M but do it in 2 pieces. I have seen a few Ferrari's done this way.

Gents: I agreee with Paul, where do you stop! It's a car and trust me as sad as it sounds, these cars will outlive us all. So drive it enjoy it and if it chips here there so be it and if it's really bad, paint it Don't get me wrong it's gr8 takig pride in your jewel but there is only so much you can do. I don't care who says what, the bra's have their problems, I have done it twice. You know if it was such a gr8 idea the car manufacturers would have thought of it as well. Yes it will increase the cost of the car but when you are spending 6 figure on a car who cares about anothe $2K.

I agree. The orange peel texture of the 3m film on a full hood will not look too aesthetically pleasing.

    Re: Clear Bra Full Hood?

Good to see that ppl are mentioning about the orange peel look. For light colors less obvious but for dark colors, it is easy to see. For ones want to get it, plz find a real car with the film, not pictures. If you decide to get it, get with edge wraped. 3M kit does not wrap the edges.

The way you say just repaint obviously it wouldn't bother you to have a repainted car. Sorry, just don't feel the same way. If chips and re-paints don't bother you then there's no need to get the install. But do you really want to give a 1 or 2 or 3 year old car a paint job ? There's a lot to be said about having all original paint. Giving up on having original paint so early for no reason doesn't make sense to me. Personally I'm a little sick /anal (I know it) in that department but a re-paint just isnt an option for me and when I used to get chips before I started using this product it would [censored] me off to no end. Why let the most visible part of the car get trashed ? Why let your car be destroyed only to make it worse by repaiting it if you can make an investment and protect it ? And the clear bra would cost a lot less then costs for a re-paint & depreciation from being painted.

It's gotten so the norm in my area with the higher end cars that if you haven't had it done people will walk by your ride with a chipped up front and make comments like - Eeesh. At the Ferrari Concourse I went to in October there were only a hand ful of cars that didn't have it done.

I keep my cars pristine. I've walked away from buying a few cars that were repainted. If you ever go to sell you can never prove the car wasn't in a accident. I wouldn't buy a car with a re-paint and the last one (M5) that I had to spray because someone tapped my re bumper I couldn't sell fast enough. I realize most people don't feel this way but I do. It's no so much the bras that have their problems as the install. Done like my installer there is zero problems. Every sports car I buy from now on will leave the dealers lot and be driven directly for film. Not only because it protects against a chewed up front end but because when installed behind the wheels stops the sand on the road from blasting off your finish at that spot. Nothing you can do will avoid this problem even if you dont get a chipped up front end.

"You know if it was such a gr8 idea the car manufacturers would have thought of it as well. Yes it will increase the cost of the car but when you are spending 6 figure on a car who cares about anothe $2K"

-----That's why Porsche installs a piece on all 997's. They have thought of it. Sure it looks bad because it's very thick and the edges are exposed but they have thought of it. Same with Ferrari who installs a few pieces around the cars. Same w/ GM who's now installing it on a few vehicles. The reason why they don't try to do a full install, with front bumper etc. it would take way to much time. It can only be done by hand with 2 guys at least and done right is a 2 -3 day process. They couldn't do the job an charge the "$2K" that people on the street can charge.

Everybody's different. I thought it was a big waste of time with some of my other cars until I bought my first car over $125,000. I gave it a try and now I find I enjoy driving a little bit more because the fear of getting chips isn't in my head when I'm suppose to be out driving and enjoying myself. Now I even have it done on my inexpensive SUV. To each their own.

My Silver C2S there is no orange peal. My Red CS there is no orange peel. On black (like on my SUV) the film looks shinier but there's no orange peel. But honestly even if the pieces you saw and were normal to have orange peel associated with the products texture that would look a lot better IMO than looking at paint DAMAGED by chips and dents from rocks.

    Re: Clear Bra Full Hood?

I think you will find people all over the place on the clear bra. I know that I don't like rock chips or door dings. My car will be my daily driver and when it gets a door ding, I will call the paintless dent man. I would rather see the "lines or the orange peel" of a clear bra than look at paint chips.
Any paint job regardless of the reason, will make potential buyers concerned about a previous accident.
