Best Racing Helmet / Suit and Shoes?

Hey everyone, what is your recommendation on the best helmet (Bell?), racing suit and racing shoes (Piloti?) out there? I plan on tracking the car in the Spring and need new gear.

Re: Best Racing Helmet / Suit and Shoes?

IMHO the best suit is by far Alpinestar and Arai helmet

Re: Best Racing Helmet / Suit and Shoes?

I use Arai now and previously Bell, both are good. The Bell was probably a little more comfortable if you plan on spending a long time in it. Fire proof balaclava's are good for soaking up sweat and keeping the helmet fresh. No smutty comments to the last point please. Sparco race suits fit me well.

As with most of these things it's down to personal taste as there are a number of companies producing quality products. None make you go faster, that's down to the size of your balls

Re: Best Racing Helmet / Suit and Shoes?

lol - Have any of you tried any kind of Simpson product?

Re: Best Racing Helmet / Suit and Shoes?

If you want the best, go with Stand21.
The ST 2000 suit (known by many as "my pajamas") are quite simply the most breathable, comfortable and best racing suit there is. period.

Helmets are a little harder as everyone has a different head, and some types fir better than others. Again Stand21 makes fantastic helmets as does, Bell Sparco and Arai. I need a new helmet this winter (old one is a SA1995) and I think I'm going to buy a Stilo ST3 because it's different, one one has one that I've seen, is light, nice design and has all the communications already built in (which makes in car communication while I'm instructing much easier and neater). But helmets are an area where you have to try on a bunch to see what you like. Closed face, large eye-port/small eyeport etc...

As for shoes, when just lapping etc. I use Pilotis and they are pretty good, and comfortable so I can walk around the pits without hurting my feet or looking like a dink (which is what happens when you wear race shoes walking around)

I like Stand21 long gauntlet gloves with outside seams. They are quite a bit more expensive than most others, but they are worth it.
Also Like Nick says above, buy a balaclava! It will add years to your helmet!

antonio_spain is 100% right Alpinestars and Arai....

And A-Stars makes a GREAT suit....

I don't like the piloti shoes and no real race driver would wear them - they are too big and bulky... fine for touring the countryside but not for the race track.... Get some A-star racing shoes as well....

All helmets that meet the the SAxxxx standards will be safe...the SA2005 spec should be out soon. Most sanctioning bodies require a helmet that meets the latest 2 ratings, so when SA2005 comes out, the SA1995 helmet will no longer be allowed.
An important comfort point is the weight of the helmet, lighter ones made from carbon fiber are much "easier" on the neck muscles.

    Hi,
Could you kindly provide the link for Stand21 prodcuts.
    Thanks

Re: Best Racing Helmet / Suit and Shoes?

    aj,

the most important thing about the helmet is the fit. you have to try each helmet and see if it fits you well or not.

for shoes puma make very good shoes called Future Cat Hi Pro P which is very comfortable. their gloves are very good too.

Re: Best Racing Helmet / Suit and Shoes?

If your are getting a racing suit, it sounds like you want all nomex products in case of fire. In that case, you probably want a real race shoe, and not Pilotis. All the race companies make suitable shoes. Puma, Sparco, etc.

    Love my Sparco gloves BTW.

Stand21 is impressive, as is Stilo. I've been in contact with them asking about custom paint jobs for helmets (very expensive may I add).

The Stand 21 site is www.stand21.fr

I don't think either has come out with a Snell2005 certified helmet yet?

Re: Best Racing Helmet / Suit and Shoes?

No one has a 2005 yet. The stickers arn't allowed to be put into helmets until the end of this month...

Wait till after the new year

I believe Simpson already has Snell2005 certified stuff, but I don't know when I'd be able to receive it.

Re: Best Racing Helmet / Suit and Shoes?

The Snell '05 regulations have been out for some time and I'm sure that there are warehouses of helmets sitting around, but Snell only sent out the stickers for the helmets (I believe) last month, and they can't be shipped out until I think the end of this month. That's what I've been told anyways...

Custom painting is usually more money than the helmet (unless you're buying a custom made Schuberth...) A somewhat cheaper alternative is the Chrome and Carbon fiber look coverings on the Stand21 helmets.

As for Piloti shoes, as an above poster said, in NO way would I wear them racing the car. I do find them nice to wear for spirited driving and lapping days where I'm jumping from the passenger seat to the drivers seat and back all day.

I think you'll find that there will be a trickle of '05 helmets in Dec. but come Jan-Feb (and the start of the race season in Daytona etc) it will become a flood.
