IMO, White with Green is most classic and I think Silver with Red would be pretty sharp! Smiley

    Are you getting one?

Almost all of them were triple throat carburetors (Weber 46) but on one, the n.17, was installed a 4 cam engine with slide valve injection from the 916 engine (that is why I mistyped my reply before, actually one R had indeed the 4 cam). This was the car that won the Tour de France in 1969.

Wow - any pics of that motor?  On Google, I just see the 4-cylinder version...

The white with red stripes was painted on the World Record 911 R (Monza 1967) . It was a homage to the nationality of the Swiss drivers (Jo Siffert, Rico Steinemann ). The second paint scheme : white with green stripes , was the homage to the sponsor of this amazing achievement (British Petroleum) and in this paint scheme the car was repainted and used for promotional purposes.  If PTS was available I would paint it in Reventlon blue , the last R ever made.

The 916 was a 914 with fixed roof, flares and a 2.7RS engine

the 911R you're talking about had a Type 901/21 engine instead of the regular 911R Type 901/20. The only difference was the slide valve MFE which took it from 210bhp to 220bhp

Sweet!  I think I blew my chance to get one (aside from financial issues), since I withdrew deposit from big out-of-state dealer (afraid of all the 918 customers) to put deposit at small local dealer who got no 991 RS...

Didn't realize 918 customers might not get all the cars...

not the Porscbe 916 but the engine type 916 from the Porsche 908

    Re: 911 R Thread Closed

I thought the 908 was a Flat-8?  So many combinations.

Wikipedia does show a Typ 916 Racing Twin-Cam motor (version of 901 Flat-6).  Would love to see photo...

Maybe some 911R were raced with this motor retrofitted, but don't think any factory delivered.

    Re: 911 R Thread Closed

Grant - sorry I was writing in hurry. Here is more insight on the R equipped with the 916 engine type. (from the Ingram collection):

"During his research into 017, Dr. Eads was able to confirm with Porsche motor sports mechanic Valentine Schäffer that 017 was indeed one of two 911R’s that had the infamous 916 (four cam) engine installed. (Its infamy arose from its performance charateristics: 230 horsepower at 9,000 rpm, with a usable power band only from 5,000 rpm up.) The testing department had used 017 as one of the test mules until being sold in 1970 to Victor Hugo O’Farrill Avila. This also explains why there is a square cut out in the rear sub frame of the engine bay that Jerry Woods noticed as he installed the motor into 017 during it’s restoration. The cut out is the only way a Typ 916 motor possibly could fit in the engine compartment."

I think if Porsche respect the original R it's the lightweight modern 911 - 1300kg or under?
