    Yes, very interesting product but I just hope that Mercedes did more than just slapping a R badge to the AMG GT S and raising the power...

    I read the review of their latest C63 AMG S Coupe in Sport Auto and they messed up the setup, big time.

    Mercedes-AMG GT R Gets 577 HP, Hits 100 km/h In 3.6 Seconds





    With just a few days until it will celebrate its world premiere in Goodwood, Mercedes-AMG has announced the first technical specs of the AMG GT R.

    The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 of the GT S has been upgraded from 503 HP (510 PS) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque to 577 HP (585 PS) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft).

    The extra punch has dropped the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time by 0.2 seconds, to 3.6, and increased top speed by 8 km/h (5 mph) to 318 km/h (198 mph).

    The "Beast of the Green Hell", as Mercedes refers to it in the latest teasers, promises chassis improvements, better brakes, steering and suspension and a more aggressive body kit, which has been aerodynamically tweaked.

    Power, dude...power. The car has not enough to compete with the cars in this class.

    Also, this prejudice against AWD is pure old school mentality. I suggest you drive various modern AWD sports cars with ESP turned off and/or in the sportiest driving mode program, you'd be surprised.

    Example: My R8 V10 Plus slides over all four wheels if you put it in Performance mode DRY, it can't get more emotional. Smiley Not very useful though for fast lap times, not good for the tires and pretty dangerous if you are too fast. For public roads not really recommended, for the track, you need different tires (PZero works well for a round or two maybe and then... Smiley).

    The 991.1/991.2 Turbo S may have a bit of a more forgiving AWD setup, true but they can be fun as well. I never had complaints about the chassis setup or driving emotions at the limit but these cars are only fun when driven very fast and at the limit and where can you do that on normal roads? Not possible and most Turbo S drivers won't use such a car on a track anyway, so what remains? A boring sounding 911.
     

    Have you driven the AMG GT S? Superb sound (though not even close to a n/a car) and good handling but with various traction issues when the turbo boost kicks in. Actually, it reminds me a bit of my former C63 AMG Coupe PP but traction is a bit better, surprisingly. 

    The AMG GT S is no GT3 and if you think you love a car because it goes sideways, why don't you exchange your GT3 RS for a AMG GT S? Smiley A 911 is basically the best next thing you can get to AWD...the rear engine design has a purpose but I guess I don't have to tell you that.

    A car with constant traction issues can be fun but it can also be a pain in the ass at some point. 

    Mercedes may have done a better job with the new AMG GT R but the power won't be enough to impress and no matter how good the chassis will be, traction issues will still exist.

    Remember? The AMG GT S was supposed to be a Porsche killer but it can't even beat the new 991.2 Carrera S, a car with 90(!) hp less. Smiley I am talking track performance here, not straight line.

    It's not that it is desirable to have a car so lacking in traction that it goes sidways all the time (not for me at least).  It is more that the fun of driving includes having to manage the throttle in some sense, rather than having the awd pull you out of the corner.  That's pretty much it.

    0-100kph is pretty meaningful, when is the last time you did a launch? 5-100kph is probably more relevant.  

    Whether this car is good or not will depend on how connected it feels compared to the standard models.  I think that is why people buy GT3 over TTS, though TTS has more performance more of the time.

    Relevant acceleration actually doesn't occur until about 50 kph+. I don't think I ever really drive lower than 50 kph.

    The slowest roads in the US are 25 mph and the rule is generally 5 mph over is fine as far as tickets go. So 30 mph or 50 kph is about the lowest you'll ever actually be going aside from launching from a stop light.

    Driving 25 mph in the US outside of heavy traffic would most likely lead to you be tailgated by people who don't know why you're going so slow. It's actually frustrating for people to drive 25 mph in my experience. It's very noticeably slow.

    Come on Christian, you make it sound as if 570hp is barely adequate, I really don't care about those numbers. If the power to weight, and power to grip balance is nicely judged, I'm happy. Be it with 200hp or 600hp. 

    It's not about drifting either, yes that's fun, but a GT3 serves that purpose equally well. It's not because 911's excel in traction that they're not beautiful machines to slide.I doubt the GT-R has the traction issues  you'd lead us to believe, in the press it is praised because of its impressive traction despite its layout.

    I have high hope for the car, let's see what it brings.

    Frank, I haven't driven the AMG GT R yet, so I don't have a clue how good or bad traction is, you're right.

    However, looking at AMG's track record lately (incl. the new C63 AMG Coupe S and even the sedan), I am very skeptical. Of course, the GT R is a different kind of beast but... yes

    Maybe I kind of gave up on AMG after the AMG GT and the very high hopes attached to it.

    Of course 570 hp are adequate...if the car has the traction to put these horses on the road and if the weight is OK. Judging by the 0-100 kph claim however, I have my doubts but like I said before, I haven't driven the car yet, so this is pure speculation.

    This car will be more than capable. It will toast any non-Turbo Porsche around the track IMO. We just saw that the M4 GTS was fast. The SLS Black Series was fast. I'm sure this will be fast too.

    The SLS BS was fast? When? Smiley Well, OK...not bad for such a car but... Smiley  The M4 GTS is a car which BMW basically developed to make Porsche look bad but if you look at their "real" product, the M4, you know that it cannot really hurt Porsche in any way. The M4 GTS doesn't make BMW any money, this is more of a show car to make a point (and in my opinion a pointless one as long as it is limited in production).

    Didn't we just see how a AMG GT-S was quicker on the track than your Audi, RC? smiley

    Btw: The AMG GT R gets apparently 585 hp and not 570 hp. Weight is not much reduced though, maybe slightly under 1600 kg.

    OK, made a mistake. That said, check out these lap times. The R8 is usually on more aggressive tires than the GT-S and has way more power (503 vs 610.) And, well, the SLS BS was actually very quick for how old it is now.

    Yeah, I remenber watching SLS BS reviews when it came out and everyone said it was miles better dynamically than the SLS.

    The R8 actually has the same semi-slicks the AMG GT S was using...Cup 2. 

    In the Sport Auto Supertest, the R8 miraculously "lost" over 30 hp, so he did "only" 7:32. Not a second more or less than the 991 GT3. 

    In a second (comparison) test with the Huracan and the 991.2 Turbo S, you can actually see the real performance (similar to the one in many other car magazines).

    I won't even start with the rumor regarding this (the miraculous power loss) because you wouldn't believe it. 

    The R8 V10 Plus is not positioned/marketed as a track car but a super sports car similar to the Huracan but with more manners as a daily driver and a less flashy exterior. If Audi wanted to promote the R8 as a track car, they would done a couple of things differently.

    Well, I guess you will realize this with the upcoming R8 GT. indecision angry (and yes, they also will bring a base model with a lame V6 bi-turbo and 500 hp).

    They always dyno the car before or after a Supertest, so manufacturers don't cheat (not that this isn't possible anyway...). The Sport Auto Supertest is the only review with subpar test figures (straight line) for the R8, so the power loss was real and the track time under the possibilities. 

    Yes, maybe it was just bad luck for Audi but don't forget that Audi is part of VW Group and they never planned to market the Audi as a track car, if you get my drift.

    If you think that every single company at VW Group is independent: The CEOs from all major brands came together a long while ago and test-drove together the 991.1 Turbo S, the new R8 V10 Plus and the Huracan. So they are internal comparisons and marketing considerations for each car.
