    Facelift or all new?

I have been resding up on the 997 anywhere I can and have read some other posts that suggest the 997 will just be another facelift and not a new car. I would have to disagree. With all the photos I have seen, especially the ones found here http://www.bcagentur.de/Porsche/ posted by rookie. The rear tends to flare out more around the wheels and in picture#4 you can really see a very different, more 993ish, front wheel arch than the current 996.

Just wondering what you guys have to say about this, all new like a 964-993-996-997 transformation, as I beleive. Or just another facelift a la 2002 996?

    Re: Facelift or all new?

This is the pic I am refering to.

    Re: Facelift or all new?

Its imposible to tell from the pics since they are just skin deep, it could be just a cosmetic re-styling with a few more horses on the same engine. I certainly doesn't look on the outside as different as the 964 to the 993 or 993 to the 996 but it doesn't necesarily have to be. We can't tell if the chasis, engine, etc are different for it to be a new model and not a fecelift, so Porsche will have us hanging till the last monent to see the insides personally I have my doubts that Porsche will just do a simple re-style of the 6 year old 996 and label it a new 997.

    Re: Facelift or all new?

The real change is supposed to be the 998. 997 will be more of a cosmetic makeover and engine upgrades. That being said, I think everyone is looking forward to the 997 (obviously)!

I would like to see the #s from Porsche in terms of car content, percentage new vs. percentage same. We might be pleasantly suprised.

    Re: Facelift or all new?

I expect that it will be more than just a facelift (ala 2002), but I don't expect as many changes as we have seen in the past (911-964-994-996). I think the basic engine, tranny, suspension will be the same (until the double-clutch paddle shifter is available). Most of the differences will be cosmetic (interior and exterior) and the engine for the base model will be the current X51, IMHO.

    Re: Facelift or all new?

If they keep the M96 engine on the carrera's that means that we will have more RMS leaks for a long time until they finally decide to build a new engine since 2003's are still suffering from RMS probs after all these years of Porsche trying to fix the problem.
I for one I'm planning on getting a 997 but if they keep the engine that will change unless they really offer a C2S version with a new engine. And this is from someone who's 996 is characteristically leaking oil right now in the garage, so its off to the shop next week for a RMS and intermediate shaft seal replacement, hopefully no engine or transmition replacement is needed (no warranty).

    Re: Facelift or all new?

Rumour mill had "significant adjustments to suspension"...equivalent to changes seen b/w 964 to 993.

    Re: Facelift or all new?

it will be a big facelift, not a whole new car!!
i now it, i work there!!!

    Re: Facelift or all new?

Ok, alot of people saying no new car. But I also get the impression that the exterior styling will go a bit deeper than just new round headlights. Sure same engine and suspension, but a new look for the body? Also when is the 998 expected, i.e. what is the expected life span of the 997?

    Re: Facelift or all new?

    tell us more!!!

    Re: Facelift or all new?

gosh! it' possible that there's nothing clear about this 997?
    tell us ,please!

    Re: Facelift or all new?

sorry, i cant, but i can say, that it will be a great car!!!
it looks amazing and the sound.... only WOW

    Weissach,Zuffenhausen,Ludwigsburg or Leipzig?

    Re: Facelift or all new?

    Strebel,
    Welcome to the forum man.
You say the sound will be great, excellent. I was scared about that.
Are talking standard or sport exhaust. Is RC right saying there will ne longer be sport exhaust available?

I never said that there won't be a sport exhaust available, I just said there is a rumor that there won't be one available on the 997. Huge difference, Francois.

Facelift or not? Well, I'd say the 997 is a completely new Porsche, even if it might not look that way at the first look.
The change from the 996 to the 997 is not as siginificant as it was from the 993 to the 996 but the 997 is definetely not only a facelifted 996.
We shouldn't forget one thing: the 996 is the most successful 911 ever built. Why should Porsche completely change the design and the technical specs? A new and fresher look, a revised engine and suspension, an overworked interior and some quality improvements are already more than a facelift.
Personally I'm only a little bit disappointed that the 997 engines don't get that power jump I expected. Porsche doesn't have to put 500 HP on a normally aspirated 997 but at least they could raise the base power to 360 HP. It is a shame that the new Mercedes SLK(!) 55 AMG probably will have more power than Porsche's sportscar icon, the 911.
I know that power isn't everything but the weight on the new 997 won't be lower than on the 996.
That said, I think that the 997 will be a very nice 911. Probably much nicer than the 996. However I'm not sure how much of a success it will be because people really seem to expect something spectacular, something much more powerful than the 996 and something completely new. I'm afraid they won't get that and the fact that the Cayenne is doing so well, especially in the US, might hurt 911 sales further. I know that some people don't agree with me but I really think that the dropping 911 sales also have something to do with the Cayenne. Time will tell.

    - Very good point.

My personal guess is that this is indeed an all new model. If it wasn't it would still be called the 996. Even though the E60 5 series contains parts from the E39, does it make it an E39 5 series? Absolutely not. Parts go from generation to generation and eventually become phased out. Why should Porsche or any other car manufacture for that matter spend extrodinary amounts of money on all new parts for every all new generation. Not puting any words in anyones mouth, just making a point.

    Re: Facelift or all new?

RC - am I to take that your insights give little credence to the prospect of the "S" versions being equipped with the GT3 engine?

    Nope, I don't think so.

    Re: Facelift or all new?

I dont think, that it wont be available.. and thats what i've heard, i think it sounds like a c4s i think, so between, more, in german we say, grollen... ihr deutschen wisst, was ich mein

but, i thinnk it will be a sport exhaust available, why not?? Porsche is a SportsCar, an why no Sports exhaust??

    Re: Facelift or all new?

    Strebel,

Have you actually seen the new 997 yourself? If so, what can you tell us about the car? Do you know if Porsche plans to unveil the car at the Detroit Auto show this January? Thanks in advance for your reply.
