Owner's manual - integrated cell phone

Does anyone have the owner's manual that describes how the cell phone will work in the U.S. cars? Can you scan the page for me - PLEASE!- I know the keypad will not work, but I want to know if the other functions of the phone are accessible via the PCM, such as scrolling through the phone's contact list and initiating a call. I hope i don't have to touch the phone to initiate a call!

Re: Owner's manual - integrated cell phone

I took delivery last week and was disappointed to learn that the PCM system will not work with any phone, not now, not later. Porsche really dropped the ball with this, in my opinion. There is no mention of phones in the manual.

You've got to be kidding?!? No level of integration at all? None? Why did they let me order the car with phone prep?

Can anyone else in the US market please confirm whether there is or NOT any phone integration with the 997S...thanks!

This is just so basic! My car is scheduled to exit production sept 20th -- tomorrow -- and now i'm considering walking away from the order. The one thing i told the dealer i had to have!

Re: Owner's manual - integrated cell phone

I must admit to being rather surprised that a new model super premium car coming to market in late 2005 does not have Bluetooth integration, which would avoid any physical connectivity issues.

Also, of course no provision for satellite radio. No line-in audio jack, either I would guess.

i REALLY REALLY want this car -- i've been waiting for months and it is just about here! Can anyone else confirm the phone integration question? Are there after-market solutions that are just as good?

For Porsche to ignore its largest market is really something. We buy almost 40% of their output, yet they cannot give us a simple integrated phone?

OK - i just read RCs update (i.e. False information, gossip and updates - trying to clarify! ) and it seems the US market is screwed when it comes to the phone!

Porsche made their decision now i must decide whether to cancel the order. I have a problem with paying $100k for a car and needing to install a completely un-integrated phone cradle system. just simply weird. I waited for the 997, guess i'll wait till the 998. What a bummer -- the car actually exited production today!

Re: Owner's manual - integrated cell phone

i had/have the same feelings about the phone. here is what a dealer told me (no idea if it's BS):

porsche wanted to rush the US realease of the 997. some options, among others the phone module for the PCM, need approval from several government bodies / agencies. according to the dealer, this is why they made a PCM usint front plate without it. they basically gave up egtting the approval for now.

the dealer also says that sooner or later, the US will get the same PCM unit front plate, and then, GSM will be no option.

he also mentioned that it should even be possible to change the PCM front plate and buy the GSM module via tquipment.

    (end quote from dealer)

i don't know how much of this is true. and the situation is less than pleasing. i don't understand why porsche "exculdes" the possebility by closing the slim slot. they could have just left it open, even if the GSM module is not an option for the US right now...

Re: Owner's manual - integrated cell phone

what really bothers me is that after the 2003 model year, when they went to fiber optics for all the cars,

    there has BEEN NO AUX-IN.

    WTF

Re: Owner's manual - integrated cell phone

I felt exactly as you do. I threatened to cancel the car, but, like you, I wanted it. Hey, a telephone keypad that doesn't work is lunacy, a computer screen and "nav" button without navagation is annoying, but I do love the car.

I also own a 360 .... forgive me for writing this, but even the new F430 will not offer navagation, a telephone, or cruise control.

Nonetheless, the new 911 is an impressive car and I'm enjoying it very much.

Re: Owner's manual - integrated cell phone

yes but with the 360/430 at least you can retrofit an aftermarket system

and or change the stereo components easily

with Porsche's MOST bus, which was advertised as 'the new standard'... it makes any aftermarket additions prohibitively expensive to do.

    irony at its best.

Re: Owner's manual - integrated cell phone

Does the keypad have any functionality with the Nav system?

Re: Owner's manual - integrated cell phone

For what it is worth the PCNA 112 page book about the 997/997S has the following entry on page 109 in the listing of options under Electronics:

"PCM integrated phone - GSM based phone, requires SIM card (Expected release date (12/04)"

I know these books are in print before the car is released, but perhaps there is a ray of hope that this integrated phone option will be available through Tequipment in 2005.

That does offer a glimmer of hope! Might this mean that i can have it installed once it is released in 12/04 or is it possible that it will be only for cars ordered/spec'd after 12/04?

Re: Owner's manual - integrated cell phone

That is one of the unanswered questions.
