Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

    No one cares?

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

I do. Thanks for the link, had a hard time getting sufficient info on my typical motorsport sites.

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

No problem Ferdie. I am a bit happy that Jaime Melo crashed his car but not with the fact he ran into one of the Farnbacher Loles car. Go Lizards!

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

The P2 category is too close! Who do you think will win the last 20 minutes?

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

rs spyder overall winner ! i been follow this on motorstv all day

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

Sweet deal Bazza! I was rooting for Flying Lizards the whole day. Posting at the Lizard blog... mainly giving them my support. If that did anything I doubt it. The last twenty minutes was really close. I was nervous Adrian was going to catch up and pass Dumas. What a race!

Next up is the Melbourne GP!

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

but last year race was even closer with audi vs porsche !

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

so u guys going to catch the f1 later on!?

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

I sure am! Not really rooting for anyone there but going to watch it for the heck of it.

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

Great win for PAG and Penske! Overall, LMP2, and GT2!

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

    Well done Porsche!

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

Lowe's Fernandez Racing lost second place after the post-race scrutineering. So the rest of the field moves up the board. I will provide more information later.

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

Wow! porsche victory over TDI and ferrari!

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

American Le Mans Series: Sebring results

    What a race!

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

As you can all imagine, I'm over the moon!!!

Not only was this the first overall win for Porsche in 20 years, it was also the first overall win at Sebring by a LMP2 car.

It was also the fist win for the 997 EVO in it's maiden race.

    CONGRATULATIONS!

    Now some concerns:
    1) The Acuras are very quick and seem to be quicker than the Spyders. They not only set the fastest time during the practices last week. as they had the fastest LMP2 lap time in the race.
Now I'm not sue they are able to maintain that pace lap after lap, but they will improve.
Also - I'm not sure that the Spyders were concerned with setting the fastest laps, as they know what it really takes to win a 12H grueling race.
However, it looks like Porsche need to not only keep a watchful eye, but need to move ahead.

    2) The 997 is clearly slower than the F430.
One of the F430 drives (that has also driven the 997's) said that the F430 was the best GT car he has ever driven , and that it felt almost like a "little prototype".
Question: Can Porsche get that type of handling from the 997?
My opinion: Bring on a centrally mounted V8 Carrera GT road car ASAP, if they want to remain competitive in that class.

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

With Porsche taking control of VW this week means that they won 3 out of 4 classes this weekend at Sebring.

It is for sure that Porsche's RSR is not as fast as the Ferraris. From the various articles about the two rivalries, the Ferrari sounds more planted throughout the various courses. I wonder what if Porsche did without the smaller wheels to allow a decreased overall weight. Would the results be the same or would the RSR function better using the wider wheels?

I think Acura might be able to hold their pace through the season. Why? Because most of the races throughout the season are 2 hours and 45 minutes long and the Acura cars faced issues much later into Sebring. This might be something that Porsche is aware of, which I have a feeling this will be battle between not only Audi and Porsche but also Acura in the mix.

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

Thx. I used it throughout the day.

At first I thought there were errors when it showed Audi's weren't in the lead, and the Peugot was far off the pace.

Damn, the RS Spyders must be plenty quick and reliable.

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

No problem Heist. I hope you guys used the live video feed since throughout the race you could have seen the action as well had some commentation to go with the live-timing page. I am not sure if there will be another video feed for the upcoming St. Petersburg event. I will keep everyone posted next time around.

Modrocket, the 997RSR has the larger wheels.
They decided to go with the larger wheels (and thus more weight) to get in exchange , bigger air restrictors. (A good way of making the Flat 6 competitive with Ferrari's V8.

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

My bad, I meant if they went without the wider wheels rather than what I said... came out totally wrong.

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

No problem! I think that any benefits garnered from the skinnier tires (i.e. weight) would be lost but the smaller restrictor diameter that they would be forced to use.

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

Sounds like a no win situation but... I don't know. I am sure Porsche tried different combinations which the current form is the best iteration.

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

    I'm really quite concerned.
They were about 0.3 of a second off Risi's pace.

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

As already happened in comparison to the M3 GTR, the flat-6 sengine suffers more from a small airrestrictor (intake shock waves?) than the eight-cylinder cars. On the other hand, they lost quite a bit of topspeed due to the higher rolling and aerodynamic resistance on the 997. From my understanding, Porsche intended to use the (regulated) higher weight to transfer the center of gravity further to the front.

The difference in performance, in my eyes, is not primarily due to the concept but the execution. I am looking forward to the upcoming races and tend to believe that, as long as Porsche keeps up development speed, that they should close the gap to Ferrari. The Manthey 997 used in the VLN / 24h at the Nürburgring was not significantly faster than its predecessor, several teams make the switch to the current model just this season. There seems the chance to see an F430 at the Ring this season as well, admittedly the setup differences to regular racetracks will make it more difficult to adapt since most Porsche teams have accumulated quite some experience.

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

Ferdie, the 997 posted higher top speeds (at Le Mans) last year than the F430.

I have just discovered a very interesting fact: Last years car, set the fastest GT2 lap time (in race trim) at Sebring of 2:02.723. (Flying Lizards - Patrick Long)
This years car set its fastest race lap time of 2:02.721 (Flying Lizards - Richard Lietz)
    Improvement?....

I think that posting the fastest laps is a good indication of a cars ability but I have a feeling the 430GT car has a faster average lap time than the RSR.

Re: ALMS: 12 Hours of Sebring

Modrocket - The Ferrari posted a faster time.(about 0.3 seconds faster)
My point is that there is no difference in lap times between last year's and this year's car.
