    Shakal:

Thats true N52 isn't good as N53, but who cares for those engines when N54 is available Smiley

    True as well. Smiley

But by the time the N54 will be available, no-one will order a car in white anymore. Smiley

    Re: BMW Z4 E89 Official

The more I see the design the more I like it, I'd give it an 8 out of 10. However, I agree the weight is a bit of a disappointment, might be like driving a 987S with Andre the Giant riding with you at all times. Still I would be very interested in a possible M version.

    Re: BMW Z4 E89 Official

    Shakal:

    Brochure:

    http://www.bmw.com/com/en/newvehicles/z4/z4/2009/_shared/catalogue/pdf/z4_roadster_catalogue.pdf

    Thanks again Shakal.

Here's what I don't like about the new Z4 compared to the new Boxster:

    * Too heavy, even with the smallest engine it weighs 1505 kg, and the Z4 35i is 1600 kg with DCT (Boxster S 1455 kg)

    * Luggage space is only 180 liters with the top down (Boxster is unaffected by top up/down)

    * Top can't be lowered/raised at speed (like the Boxster can)

    * No limited slip diff (optional on Boxster)

    * No sport exhaust (optional on Boxster)

BUT it does have a few things going for it compared to the Boxster:

    * Price, the top-of-the-line Z4 35i costs the same as the base model Boxster (2,9)

    * DCT gear shift on the steering wheel that is logical (the Porsche PDK buttons won the "Disappointment of the year" in EVO magazine)

So it's a close call, but as long as the Boxster is the only one available with LSD and sport exhaust, it would probably be my choice (with a manual gearbox)

And why does it "only" get the 258 hp and 306 hp versions of those engines (when the 330i has 272 hp and the 740i has 326 hp)?

I don't expect 3.0 R6 272 hp engine, because it isn't mentioned in any internal broschure. N54 engine in Z4 is "35i" , while N54 engine in 7er is "40i", which means F01 got N54 stage 2 engine while Z4 got stage 1 engine. Later, sDrive40i will be introduced, which I think it will have same engine as 740i got or maybe even more powerfull..

I still don't understand why they would give the new Z4 a less powerful 3.0l engine with  higher CO2 emissions than what they have available..

    According to the catalog the Z4 sDrive30i has 258 hp and 199 g/km CO2.

Compare that to the 330i Coupe which has 272 hp and only 173 g/km CO2.

This is because N53 engines doesn't comply EU5 norms yet. EU5 norm states a limit for PM emission, which is only applicated to diesel engines and gasoline engines with direct injection. Thats reason why they put N52 engines and not N53..

very well done, makes it a proper sports car. great lines for a convertible and that is not easy.

    Re: BMW Z4 E89 Official

This thing should almost be  a Z5 IMHO. Love it in blue, comes very very close to boxster.

haha, ironically, the new Z4 (E89) has been designed almost entirely by women:

    Juliane Blasi - exterior design
Nadya Arnaout - interior design (the one who designed CS Concpet interior as well)
Hilke Schaer - materials, trim & colors

Based on this result, I think it would be a good move for BMW to get more ladies into the design studio Smiley

BMW will soon release upgrades for the E89 from its BMW Performance division. I know there is going to be an optional sport exhaust and possibly some kind of E-LSD as offered on the Performance 135i

Same configuration as the Ferrrari California, but BMW achieved a successful profile (open or closed) and rear.

Remember when Italians were the top designers of the world?

Well, let's not forget, what came from Munich over the last couple of years. I hope the new Z4 isn't something like an accident and that BMW will find the way back to their great designs from the 80ies and 90ies.

Concerning Italian design, they still are the best: just think of cars like the Quattroporte, GranTurismo, Alfa Brera, Alfa Mito, Fiat 500, Lamborghini Gallardo etc. And please don't tell me, that not all of these cars were actually designed by Iatlians. Smiley

    Re: BMW Z4 E89 Official

Sure many Italian cars of the past and present are very good looking.

I don't know who designed the California but IMO he didn't get it right for a Ferrari, especially profile and rear. It might be great for another brand but not for Ferrari. Especially after the 599 GTB, in which you cannot find a fault. Even the 612 which is often criticised is a very attractive car.

The new Z4 proves that you can make a vario-roof car look good, well-proportioned and interesting.
