    DSG & TPMS Options

    DSG, the new flavor of Tiptronic currently available on the Audi, was rumored to be coming on the MY 2006 997. Yesterday a (more than usually knowledgable) Porsche salesman told me that at Porsche trainings, salesmen are told DSG won't be available until MY 2007.

    Same salesman also said that the TPMS (Tire Pressure Measurement System) is not yet available in America because our embedded roadway electronics system (i.e., at traffic lights, stop signs) is giving Porsche problems on both the 997 and the Cayenne.

    Can anyone confirm either of these stories?

    Every dealer so far told me, that they have problems with the tire pressure system and that they still can't fix it. He recommended not to order it.
    BTW, same in case of Ferrari.

    DSG isn't that good IMO (my wife has DSG on her Audi).

    In theory it's good because it has the next gear ready for you to use with the second clutch but in practice it doesn't know what gear you want next so you still have a painful lag on kick down. There are a few tenths of a sec performance benefits due to not having a torque converter but that doesn't impact driver experience. I can't say her DSG is any better than the auto box I had on my CLK55.

    Porsche would be better looking at creating a gear box similar to BMW's SMG which is excellent (although perhaps a little raw for some).

    If Porsche had a version of SMG I would definitely pick it.

    Not sure I would agree that BMW's SMG is better that Audi's DSG. Although I do agree with your comments about the DSG gearbox - my problem with it however is that it takes so much away from the driving experience.

    that depends what is meant by better. For driver involvement there is no question that SMG beats DSG. It's speed of gear change coupled with the throttle blip on down changes make it very well suited to performance cars. Many auto journalists hate it because they expect it to behave like an auto and complain about the jerky gear change. It takes a few days to master the gear change properly, just like if you were driving manual for the first time. For a refined luxury driving experience you are correct the DSG is better.

    It's no longer a problem of the US. German dealer today told me, that you currently can't order tire pressure system for the 997 because it doesn't work properly.

    well my dealer told me exctly the same when i was there to order mine he actually said "dont go for it , it a waste of money"
