Aston Martin reveals 2013 DB9, axes Virage

Virage discontinued after only 18 months.

At first it was only a rumor, but now it’s official that Aston Martin has decided to discontinue the Virage in order to make room for an updated DB9. The 2013MY is a mixture of Virage’s styling and the engine and chassis know-how of the Vanquish. The British automaker will offer the model as a coupe and also as a convertible (aka Volante).

At the heart of the 2013 Aston Martin DB9 is the most recent version of the firm’s V12 6.0-liter engine that produces 510 bhp (380 kW) at 6,500 rpm and 457 lb-ft (620 Nm) of torque at 5,500 rpm. It enables the car to perform the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 4.6 seconds, en route to a top speed of 183 mph (295 km/h). The 2013MY is 40 bhp (30 kW) and 14 lb-ft (19 Nm) more powerful than the model it replaces and also 20 bhp (15 kW) and 37 lb-ft (Nm) more powerful than the axed Virage.

As standard, the new DB9 comes equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes and exclusively with the Touchtronic 2 six-speed gearbox. It tips the scales at 3,935 pounds and has a 50/50 weight distribution, while riding on 20-inch five-spoke cast alloy silver wheels with Pirelli P Zero tires.

Moving inside the cabin, not many things have changed as it looks just about the same as what we have seen in the Vantage, Virage and DB9. Standard equipment includes now a backup camera, but the interior styling has not received the update seen first in the 2013 Vanquish.

The 2013 Aston Martin DB9 is already available for order, with deliveries starting next month in United Kingdom and Western Europe. The base model has a starting price in UK of 131,995 pounds; 174,994 Euros in Germany; $185,400 in U.S. and 21,995,000 JPY in Japan.

Looks exactly the same to me.

Maybe this will appeal to existing AM owners but how does the company think this will attract buyers from other marques?

Looks like a company that is out of ideas or development money (or both) and IMO this is a recipe for a slow but steady decline.

It is the same car... basically an AM shuffle of the range, renaming the Virage the new DB9 and tweaking the spec a little.

On the plus side its got more power and is now £18000 cheaper than the old Virage, so I think existing Virage owners are the most likely to be cheesed off about this.

Re: Aston Martin reveals 2013 DB9, axes Virage

So the Virage essentially becomes the new DB9, which begs the question, why did they even bother feinting that the Virage was not in fact the new DB9 when it was released a year ago.

No advancements to the gear box. No weight reduction, which is sorely needed. No changes to the infotainment system and UI, which looks dated compared to today's offerings.

I am beginning to wonder if AM's new owners aren't beginning to rest on their laurels a bit.

    A little cheesed?

Virage owners just saw their values plummet by $25,000. I'd be outright incensed.

The last time I saw something like this was a few years ago when Ducati introduced the new and much improved styling wise, Ducati 1098 at a MSRP ~$4,000 less than the outgoing 999 which had only been on the market 2 years.

999 owners felt duped and cried foul. Used 999 prices plummeted almost immediately.

Re: Aston Martin reveals 2013 DB9, axes Virage

They're taking the market for granted, and that's never a smart choice. IMO the styling of the front is spot on, but it's had the same rear since the introduction of the DB9, if they really want to stay in the game they have to step it up.

Re: Aston Martin reveals 2013 DB9, axes Virage

time to look for a good deal on a second hand DB9/virage.....

i hv yet to see one single virage on the roads here.
