    CLK CABRIO CDI?

Hello. After A4 2.5 TDI also BMW decided to enter in the cabrio market with a DIESEL engine, the 320Cd Cabrio. Do you know or think that MB will fight them with the answer of CLK CDI Cabrio ( perhaps 270 )? I will buy it if MB will done.

    Re: CLK CABRIO CDI?

At first I thought there was already a CDI CLK cabrio, with the 270 engine, since the Coupe CLK uses one. But then I realised there wasn't one, probably due to diesel emissions entering the cabin? MB has a range of diesel engines, but none of them are put in their cabriolets, guess there must a be a valid reason. Noise and emissions I bet.

    Noise.

Just imagine MB saying they wouldn't want to inflict CLK Cabrio passengers to the same diesel fumes they impose on everybody else who happens to be around the outside of the car!

    Re: CLK CABRIO CDI?

Emissions as in diesel fumes causing cancer. There has been a lot of press regarding this. I suppose once you have an open top, its more likely diesel emissions will enter the cabin.

I knew what you meant, but what about all the pedestrians, motorcyclists, passengers in other non-diesel cabrios OUTSIDE a CLK CDI who have to breathe its fumes, as well as those of all the other diesel cars and trucks on the (European) roads! If diesel fumes are carcinogenic for cabrio drivers, then surely they are for other road users as well. Unless MB thinks that anyone not driving a CLK is a lower form of life?

That's why I suggested that MB would hardly be likely to cite exhaust gas emissions as being the reason for not making a diesel cabrio!

    Re: CLK CABRIO CDI?

Once and for all I want to set something straight:

Diesel engines are not "greener" or less harmful than fuel engines.
The only reason why Diesel engines have such success in Europe is the price tag of Diesel.
Combined with a usually lower consumption, Diesel engines are great to save money but they aren't less harmful for people.

Especially in Europe we love justify buying a Diesel because of the environment. The only thing saved or "protected" is the money in your pocket.

I would never buy a Diesel because even modern Diesel engines take away all the fun. Before buying the ML55 more than three years ago, I testdrove the ML400 which a lot of people recommended to me. I hated it, awful.
Since then, I drove many different Diesel models, including Audis, BMWs and Mercedes'. Horrible. Real fun killers.

The new bi-turbo charged BMW Diesel engine might be different but I had no chance to testdrive it yet. The performance figures published by SPORT AUTO were impressive for a Diesel car but it remains to be seen if the fun driving this car is impressive too.

    RC,

I'd say this is in the eye of the beholder!

I don't have anything against diesel engines since their abundance of torque (in modern turbo-engines) is quite remarkable. No other engine type can rival that, at least not with a similiar fuel efficiency. For relaxed driving this engine characteristic is superb!

Fuel efficiency and therefore CO2-emissions are much lower on a diesel engine since their efficiency is much higher than on gasoline engines. You can realize that since the heat of the engine won't be sufficient on cold days to raise the cabin's temperature.
All other emissions are not any better until at least the particle filter will be common on these engines.

What we should take into consideration is the amount of technology necessary on these engines to be competitive. Won't be much different to the technology level in the Cayenne TT, but in a 100hp econobox the diesels are much more sophisticated!

By the way, in Asia they still have a very bad image for passenger vehicles!
