    New Elise/Exige in 2010 ?

Looking at the table of European emission standards

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_emission_standards,

Lotus has to substitute the Toyota 2ZZGE engine (Euro 4) for a newer one prior to 1st January 2011.

The table claims that light commercial vehicles (<1305 kg) have to comply with Euro 5 standards from September 2009 on. New vehicles already in production get a prolongation until 2011 at the latest.

This would mean that we will probably see the new Elise / Exige variants next year.

    Just thinking out lout.

How do you expect the new versions to look/spec?

    Re: New Elise/Exige in 2010 ?

My guess is that it will be based on the new VVA chassis (Versatile Vehicle Architecture http://www.gglotus.org/ggrace/vva-chassis/vva-chassis.htm). It will grow in size (probably longer wheel base), though not considerably, with a tad more creature comfort. It will therefore become heavier, with a bigger engine it will need a stronger subframe = more weight, although I think Lotus will try their best to keep it below 950 kg. Comparing this weight with the competition it is still low. The chassis will get stiffer, to balance out the gain in weight. It will be rawer and more spartan to drive than the Evora. It will get less power than the Evora.
Regarding the design, I think it will get rid of all the plastic grills/fins, as they look a bit outdated, the rear lights will be single lights on each side, like the Evora, the new 458 Italia, etc...these are all new car design trends.
I have no idea about what engine they might come up with. But I wouldn't be surprised if Lotus came up with a very green engine.

Personally I would like Lotus to take the Elise back to its roots, e.g. make it lighter (approx 800 kg) instead of increasing the power and creature comforts. But this is more difficult than it sounds, going back to 800 kg with today's standards (also security constraints) will make the development and hence the sale price expensive.

I hope they can keep it light too.  I was very disappointed that the Evora ended up being so heavy (about same as Cayman).  Sounds like Toyota will continue to supply engines.  Do they have any other interesting powerplants besides the one currently in the Elise/Exige to offer?  I thought it was interesting that they will use a Subaru motor on their new FT86.

I was told that the Mk.1 Elise used several Aluminium parts that were replaced by siblings in steel on the Mk.2 version, primarily for economical reasons. I do believe that the Elise could get back to 800 kg with the appropriate materials and engineering, especially if engine power will be constrained.

Production and replacement costs will be significantly higher though and Lotus´ cars are not exactly cheap already. Smiley

Already the S1 had a steel rear frame (and a steel roll over hoop). During production of the Elise, Lotus had tried with an all aluminum subframe but they had found out that it would crack under excessive load during durability tests, so they switched to simple steel frame for rigidity and that solved the problem.

    Thanks Gauss,

I was under the impression that there were even more chassis and suspension components made of Aluminium.

Are you thinking of the braks discs, which were initially made of a lght alloy, but were later replaced by more conventional cast iron parts? Smiley
