    Clutch Question on a C2 996

    Drop off the car at the dealer for service this morning. I told them to check the clutch 'cause changing gears from first to second kind of lingers (takes a short while to engage). It kind of sounds like your driving half clutch until it engages to second gear.

    They said that I probably need a new clutch (mind you I have 20k miles on the car only). They said they could change it but it'll cost me $1,600 USD. Isn't it supposed to be under warranty.

    They told me is like break pads depends on your driving habits but told them that my previous Porsches that I had more miles on them never required a clutch at all .

    What do you guys think? they're trying to screw me or I should contact PCNA or what?

    First thing I would rule out is to see if you have the infamous RMS leak because sometimes oil leakes from the seal into the clutch/transmition making it slip, and in that case it would be covered by the warranty. Just a thought in case you haven't already done so

    EDIT: Also there is a TBS on faulty trannys in which they pop out of 2nd gear to neutral all of a sudden by itself which I don't think is related but just in case, has that ever happened? that would be covered under warranty too.

    All I know is that needing a new clutch in 20k with normal driving sounds very fishy to me, there has to be something wrong...

    When I had a leak I noticed small coin sized drops of oil on the floor of the garage right under the rear were the engine meets the tranny, close to were the stabiliser bar that links the rear wheels is, and midpoint in b/w left and right. Also you could look under the car near the seal area to see if there is some oil but that more difficult to spot from the dirt and that stuff they put on the underneath of the engine, whatever its called. But they could check it for you if you can trust them.

    There is no oil spot in my garage floor at all but I guess I have to lift the car and check it out myself.

    2000 and my factory warranty runs out in April 29, 2004. I think they're waiting to give me the shaft then.

    Ron,

    Condolences! I think (??) the clutch is covered based on normal wear and tear. Obviously, 20K is too low for a new clutch based on normal enthusiast driving.

    How about calling Sydney at Park Place in Dallas, tell her you're a friend of Dain Dunston (tell her I'm fine, thanks) and ask if she'll give you a second opinion?

    Something's wrong! This is the kind of stuff you'd expect with a British car, like an AMV8, not a Porsche!
