    How will the Porsche-VW merger affect future cars?

    Sounds like a David and Goliath story an innocent bystander never thought would be possible! Curious -has anybody stopped to ponder how Porsche's merger with the VW Group will affect future Porsches?

    Ideally, I would like to see Porsche remain almost a totally separate company, perhaps similar to an engineering contractor with the VW group or alternatively, a financial manager. My nightmare would have the Porsche brand become another subsidiary to the VW group, with chassis and parts sharing between the two companies. So... Is Porsche's future like Fiat and Ferrari, Ford and Jaguar or something else?

    Last I checked F-cars do not run on Fiat chassis.

    Last I checked F-cars do not run on Fiat chassis.



    But one will soon run on a Maserati designed and intended chassis , sharing an engine block with the F430, the Maser Granturismo and the Alfa 8C .

    Cayennes are already VWs.. Panamera might even get stuff from the Pheaton which was a huge disaster for VW.. the CEO pretty much wanted to have a upper class VW with all the technology, but it never sold.. You'd be amazed how much technology is in that thing... way ahead of new S class even! I doubt they'll just throw it all away when another team is working on the Panamera next door

    The Phaeton has been a huge success... it only needed a winged "B" above the grille to sell.

    Phaeton's bigest mistake was badging it as a VW, if it had been sold under Bentley or even Audi, it would have destroyed the S-Class. Too bad the lunatic in charge at that time was too proud to move it above VW. The market proved him wrong.

    That tells a lot about its prospective buyers... more interested in image/name/badge than the actual vehicle's substance.

    BTW the same happens with the Vette vs European sports cars. I care less for image and status; I buy substance. And can assuredly so state as I have owned both.

    DOH!!

    It's also already sold as a Audi A8, so basically the Phaeton is a complete waste of resources to market it as a VW, well it could have worked if the MSRP was lowered by about 20k, more inline with what a VW is worth.

    The Corvette name as least has a racing/sporty heritage, so even if it's a GM car, it still has the respect. I can attest to that as I had a C5 before, a 97, it was a fantastic car to drive and own.

    VW brand is still a cheap people mover, by itself it just don't have enough to support a expensive car, which was why VW bought Audi/Bentley for, to go up market. It made absolutely no business sense to move VW brand upmarket when there is already 2 brands within the company that has the heritage to do so.

    Also it made absolutely zero sense to turn a company called "the people's car" into a luxury car maker.

    The whole Phaeton thing was a result of buying car brands left and right, then thinking how to position them.

    With Audi firmly in the premium sporty segment, SEAT in the cheap sporty segment, and Skoda in the cheap comfy segment, the only spot left for VW was the premium comfy segment.

    But that was stupid given the VW name.
