    Re: Graveyard of supercar dreams

Well this is slowly getting a problem. But on the fair side living here in Belgium I see every monday in the news paper young people driving themselfs into the grave. Almost every weekend 3 to 4 young people dye of accidents with there "normal" cars. Self control is the most important thing. I like my Ferrari but drive it only fast on the race track. If you have the money to buy a Ferrari you also have the money to drive on race tracks. I have not seen many deadly accidents on race track days.

The simple fact is that people can't drive. They eat food, use cell phones and generally appear to be almost trying too hard to divert attention from the road. Turn signals are nonexistant, checking mirrors is unheard of and to top it off, every signle EU government propagates slow driving as a key to safety, which just isn't the case (most people concentrate better when driving faster and there will be a crash when you're cut off regardless of whether you're doing 130 km/h or 260 km/h).

    From the link you've posted:

Where will it all end? In a ditch, probably, or else in the dock. Next month Porsche will be in court in America accused of failing to provide adequate training to a man killed while driving in a 205mph Porsche Carrera GT.

Ben and Cory. That ambulance-chasing attorney better hope hell isn't too hot.

    Re: Graveyard of supercar dreams

The whole picture may eventually lead the EU to start limiting BHP. When the AC Cobra was launched in the UK the AC Cobra club went for a thrashing on the newly built non speed restricted M1 motorway and there were fatalities in the ensuing crash. 70mph limits were imposed after a huge outcry.

Common sense is the great asset in owning a "supercar" or any car. Highway driving is dangerous not so much by a careful driver but the other users. I saw an interview with an indycar driver some years ago - his name escapes me - and I remember when asked if he was scared on the track he said he had total confidence in his fellow drivers not to endanger his life. He added that he was much more scared on public roads because some people drive with no regard for what is going on around them.

I agree that the track is the place for speed and the highway a place for caution. It still amazes me that younger drivers still feel the need to try and race me in my 997TT when they are driving a 10 year old Ford. What they do not understand that their car maybe able to pip 100 mph but its balance, brakes, suspension etc etc has no ability to allow them to maintain control in the event of an accident situation.

Governments try and bang into us that speed kills. But speed is not the only issue - cutting people up, needless braking in the fast lane, cell phone use, no attention to mirrors, tailgating. The reality is that if somebody is in charge of a car then by endangering your life by driving without ability/recklessly then there should be laws focusing more on that then just looking for those speeding.

Sorry to bang on in this forum but I feel pretty strongly about this...and I hate seeing these things happen.

I wish all the Rennteam safe journeys

The latest smash was in November, when an LP640 on loan from Lamborghini spun off BBC TV's test track in Dunsfold, Surrey in heavy rain, putting it in the repair workshop for two months. The driver - who has not been named - was unhurt.

That'll have been The Stig then

The fact that the journo wrote of the Stig as being "the driver who has not been named" tells you a lot about how much he is in touch with the subject of his article.

That, and the fact that he seems to think that people having accidents with high performance cars is a new phenomenon.

When people daily have accidents with low-performance cars, why should others driving high performers be immune?

    Re: Graveyard of supercar dreams

I have to agree with Crash. Even though I live in an area of the US with hundreds of miles of wide open roads, I am still plagued by moronic drivers. People doing their hair, eating, talking on the phone or trying to read the paper spread out over the steering wheel. Maybe the reason is that unlike large urban areas, we don't kill them off fast enough. One possible solution would be to change the video games so that when you crash and burn you get to see yourself burning to death complete with screams or decapitated with the blood running down the door. Plus you don't get to play anymore, your dead. Maybe then they would get the idea that you are not immortal.
As for the Porsche trial. This is just one more example of "Its not my fault!"

    Re: Graveyard of supercar dreams

But lets face it, the hp numbers are ridiculous nowadays and whether its technical limitations or common sense they can't go much higher.

More R&D money should go into losing weight in the car and maybe features like hud's and night vision, etc.

My car has half the power of the new lambo, but mine can go faster than i need on top end and is not a slouch down low either. Maybe instead of more power all these cars should come standard with ceramic brakes and an extra set of rotors. (i know some do, for those maybe a mandatory driving course with emphasis on what happens when you lose control)

What's the old saying? "A fool and his money are soon parted"? Maybe they meant life too
