    Carrera GT replacement?

Anyone know or think Porsche will have another Carrera GT supercar or planning a replacement after the last GT's roll off the production line. Will Porsche continue to build $400K sports cars? I hope they do!

nah, it didn't sell worth a crap and they usually have a large lag between their supercar product rollouts anyway. as well, if the CGTs continue to tank as hard as they have, they will have probably burned a large % of their potential buyers for a follow up product.

Ben - Do you perceive that the resale prices on CGT's is headed south in a hurry? I haven't paid close attention, but I haven't seen any screaming bargains...

What's your 5-year estimated resale price?

Grant I believe Porsche leasing is quoting a less than or close to 50% residual for a 5 year lease on the CGT.

How many cars are still worth 50% of their new price after 5 years? Does anybody out there have any reliable statistics?

    Re: Carrera GT replacement?

Fritz this is a limited production supercar. I am not aware of statistics that survey this category of cars. One would think/hope that depreciation for a car of this nature is very small.

However, there are several much cheaper cars near the 60% range after 5 years including my Mini.

I think 50% of the car's value after 5 years in on the pessimistic side but not too far off either (at least for a supercar).
Where we disagree Nick is that I don't think the CGT is a limited production.
Ok yes it is but 3000 is hardly limited would you not agree?
Remember Porsche is all about maximising share holder value, I reckon if they had 5000 clients, they would build 5000.
It's like the SLR. That's where the Enzo differs because they made only 400.
CGT would be comparable to the F40 (in terms of prod. number) for example whose price has stabilised now, don't know however how much it cost when it was new?

i really don't have any idea. there are a lot of variables left to play out, and we'll only know how they'll fare once production ends and we know how many they make. as far as i know, US production ends 7/05. will the europeans buy our US dollar cars with 2 year longer parts warranties via their high euro or will they order new and pay substantial more? taxes? who knows.

all i know is the 5 year residual on a CGT lease was $150 to $175k when i bought mine.

worldwide production is 1500 and it's debatable whether they'll even build that many (can't sell that many). but yes, this number is similar to the F40s which i believe was 1399 (up considerably from their initial estimate).

Sorry Benny, I thought I read 3000 somewhere.
I think they will make 1500, well, I hope so.
I wonder what is the break even production number?

yeah, it's 1500 worldwide, but i don't know how they're gonna sell that many for anywhere near list.

    Re: Carrera GT replacement?

Back to the topic, the CAR magazine reported Porsche's plan for a spiritual successor to the Carrera GT, as a mid-engined coupe and spider to go head-to-head with Lamborghini Gallardo and mid-engined Ferraris. The mid-engined coupe/spider will share parts with the next generation 911 (P998) and Boxster, so launch date is still several years away. The P998 is not due until 2010 and the Boxster until 2011. It's unknown whether the new mid-engined model will be launched before or after the next generation 911/Boxster.

If Porsche can't sell that many CTGs, then how the hell is Mercedes going to sell 3500 SLR over the course of 7 years? Some crazy exec. must be sucking on a tail pipe.

Yep, and that's the closest they'll let him get to the steering wheel in future .......

MB will be giving away the vast majority of that production at a very steep discount to MSRP or the dealers will be subsidized on the back end.

    Re: Carrera GT replacement?

They'll probably throw in a set of golf clubs, too.

    Re: Carrera GT replacement?

Mercedes calculated the projected sales numbers by compiling potential buyers (based on their income / savings) and calculate a considerable amount of cars to be sold. Same happened on the Maybach.

The CGT sales plans were indeed considering 1500 units. I am not sure if a mid-engined car above the 911 would be a good idea, since it would have to artificially be below the CGT in terms of handling and acceleration. Besides that the 911 is, as quoted from an interview in a German car mag, intended to be Porsche's main model for the next ten years!

Regarding the residual it is very hard to explore. The funny thing is that the CGT offers almost the same thrill (maybe more) and numbers as the Enzo for a much lower price - technological advancement is pretty high on both cars.

If you compare the two with their predecessors, the F40 and 959, it becomes obvious that Porsche went the hard-core, race-bred route this way, opposed to Ferrari this time!
