Re: It's all in the pronunciation...

    See here..

Re: It's all in the pronunciation...

    How about this?

A woman introduces herself as "Simone" and pronounces it, obviously, as "Seh-moan."

You say, "Nice to meet you 'Sy-min.' "

You'd be a loser to do that.

The Porsche family member introduces him/herslf as Porsh-eh.

You obviously pronounce her/his name correctly from then onward.

Pronuncing personal names is quite different from regular old nouns.

There's an essential measure of RESPECT involved in pronouncing them _correctly_.

Just say Porsh-eh, out of respect for the family name; let the other "Porsh" guy be wrong.

Just start saying it "correctly" and after a week you'll be fine with it. It's like quitting smoking, after a few months people will look like fools when they smoke.

When Jay Leno says, "Porsh" the word "stupid" flashes across my mind. Funny huh? He's an ultimate car nut and I still think he's stupid for an instant.

In southern England you can call it a Porsche-uh, but up North you just sound like a twat doing so (for want of a better phrase!).

If people in the north of England would feel like twats if they said Porsch-uh, it's not because Porsh is equally valid, it's due to a cultural reluctance i.e. for other reasons they would feel silly. This feeling doesn't exist here in London IMHO. I know I am stoking the flames of the North/South debate here but it comes down to whether pronouncing things a certain way is respected per se or seen as being too full of oneself.

BTW, for those outside the UK who are unfamiliar with this term, a 'twat' is a word which literally means a woman's genital area but obviously 'feeling like a twat' just means feeling like an idiiot.

The feeling, defintion, and pronunciations of Northern England apply to all of the USA.

Re: It's all in the pronunciation...

As a result of this thread, I will now be calling my Ram Truck a Dodg-eh.
    Thank you very much.

Re: It's all in the pronunciation...

and do you guys say BM-W or BM-V ?
Around here we say BM-V... but to show that one is smart ( and full of [beep]) he may say BM-W and get a strange stare from the others

And back to the Porsch-eh... here we say Porsch, as we speak french and we do not pronounce the e at the end of a word. Pronouncing Porsch-eh while speaking french would be way off..

Re: It's all in the pronunciation...

lol, in the netherlands, a lot of people pronounce it as porsh. But that is not by lack of respec, merely pure ignorance. I just let them...

That's basically the same situation here in the USA...

Re: It's all in the pronunciation...

BTW, correct pronuncuation of BMW is this:

    Beee Yamb Dawww Byoooo.

    How do I know?

The first words said by the Sean Connery character on the DVD which came with my car said,

Congraaaachuuulaaations, on yourrr purchase of yourrr neeeuw Beee Yamb Dawww Byoooo... .

Soooo, obviously..., since then that's how I simply must pronounce it.

    Beee Yamb Dawww Byoooo

In my area french so I pronounce Porsh. 100 km up north I come into the Swiss german part and have to prononce Porsch-eh ( maybe more like Porch-et , because swiss-german is different then german) and then 200 km South-East I have to prononce ??? well , it's the Italien part, so not sure anymore about the correct way

Re: It's all in the pronunciation...

Off-topic/on-topic side remark: THAT word is in fact known in the English-speaking world outside the UK, but in my experience it is interestingly pronounced "twott" in the USA, not "twatt" as in the UK.

I used the "double t" to denote that the vowel before it is a short sound. This is a German convention. I believe that such double consonents are used in Italian to denote that the preceding vowel is sounded long!

Just goes to show how difficult it is to describe pronounciation in writing, especially in international forums.

You only say that because YOU cannot spell it correctly. Everybody knows that it is written without a hyphen, and you have omitted a "d" and added a spare "l".

But that's only because the letter P doesn't exist in Arabic so the letter B is used for both P and B. So, for example, you drink Bebsi whereas we drink Pepsi

BTW, the letter P does exist in Persian and Urdu...

Of course. Otherwise they'd be Bersians.

It would in fact be more correct to say that the "P" sound exists in these languages, so that native speakers of these languages have no problem with its correct pronounciation in other languages.
