    Re: Interesting R8 V10 mule...

All manufacturers are in business to make a profit, and all industries strive to find efficiencies in both processes and development. We can't expect all new cars to be one-offs like the Veyron and Enzo which don't share parts with anything else. That's why they are so expensive. What would be nice is to have some clear indication from a manufacturer of the direction or lifecycle of each variant so we can make purchase choices based on that information if we choose to. Unfortunately that's not a reasonable request.

    Re: Interesting R8 V10 mule...

    ISUK:

Just my two cents on this debate..... (having owned both Gallardos and now an R8)

It's extremely difficult for manufacturers to put clean air between cars in terms of outright performance at this price point now. To achieve significant gains you either need to strip out serious weight or massively boost power. Reducing weight takes out comfort equipment and alienates a large swathe of buyers. Adding hp adds lots of $ss to the price making the car uncompetitive. Cars like the Nissan GTR sharply bring the performance issue into focus. Why buy a 997 turbo, F430, Audi R8, Gallardo etc when a 4 seat coupe from Japan can match or beat them in the real world for up to 1/3rd the cost? The answer is brand image.

Whether we as enthusasts like it or not brand is becoming an important issue now as performance levels are equalised. There are lots of parallels with other products - watches, fashion, yachts etc where consumers will pay more for a label. For some buyers an Audi badge will simply never appeal, no matter how good the car it is attached to, as that brand has been stretched to cover virtually every market niche from 3 door hatch to 7 seat SUV plus a multitude of new ones on the horizon (A5 sportback etc). The Lamborghini brand remains focused - at least for now - on exotic, two seat performance cars with instantly recognisable styling and low production numbers. I think Audi have got it spot on with both models as they have left the Lamborghini as a rawer, less polished car that suits it's heritage. The R8 on the other hand is a very polished halo model for the Audi range.

Both the rear drive R8 and LP550 will undoubtedly be great cars and we should celebrate that they are being made at all with the economy in it's current state. Resale isn't great on most exotics these days and Ferraris are faring no better at present, in the UK at least.

I share the same point of view; totally agree with you Smiley

Yes, ready for market. Intro is very soon.

Over 100kg lighter. More power. Over 8s faster on the Ring then standard R8 V10 coupe according to my info.

    Manual and R Tronic.

    Re: Interesting R8 V10 mule...

WOW... 100kg lighter, thats a word! Where the heck to they safe this!

Great to see... might it be called RS8?

If I remember correctly, this is nearly the same amount the Gallardo vs Superleggera lost - so it's not really a surprise given they're essentially the same car.
