The only engine Porsche made (officially) was for  SEAT, but that engine was not one Porsche's best efforts.

Not sure what the definition of "made" is, but the Audi RS2 was, albeit the (brilliant) 5-pot Audi motor, heavily improved upon by the engineers at Porsche.  A car I wish I'd never sold.

Damn - I'm talking about an Audi on a Alfa 4C thread after just criticising the way our threads seem to go so far off-topic.  Sorry.

The SEAT Ibiza engine and gearbox were developed by the Porsche consulting arm. So, SEAT were licensed to use the 'SEAT System Porsche' name.

Returning to discussions on the Alfa Romeo 4C.  The video and other still photographs showing the high levels of direct labor makes me think that Fiat will be losing money on each car sold.

Have you drive a Daihatsu?  I have the unenviable task of having to drive mainstream cars every week and at the Fiesta/Focus/Mondeo end of the market, getting a Skoda is a treat.  Actually the Fords aren't bad either.

Back on topic, the 4C needs a more exclusive engine at that price and auto only is annoying

love the colour .. excellent choice!

    Re: Alfa Romeo 4C

Thanks guys, it's a better car than I dared hope! As economical on fuel as my little Clockwork Rat was - a real surprise - , better built, better equipped, cheaper to insure, much more comfortable....it's not in the least bit sporty of course, it doesn't pretend to be, and I can understand why on a sports car forum such as this some don't "get" it . But after a long day at work I prefer something relaxing to drive to be honest.

Yes I'd love a Porsche for my daily commute, a Cayenne would fit the bill nicely,  but no way could I justify the running costs Smiley  Or even an Audi - but of course I've got one, just with a different badge....Smiley

The point is if only FIAT had done as good a job with Alfa as VW has with Skoda they'd be up there with the best by now, not floundering in the mire and the 4C would  be a serious competitor for Boxster / Cayman.... rather than an oddball choice for die-hard Italian car enthusiasts. Even if and when Alfa start producing world class cars again there is a mountain of prejudice from the bad old days to overcome - look at Skoda, even though they've been building cars every bit as good as the Audi / VW models they are based on for years, there is still completely unfounded prejudice against the brand as RC has demonstrated. Smiley

There has to be hope for Alfa , judging by my recent experience there has been huge improvements with Maserati....Smiley

DC, very good and wise choice your Skoda. The wise man's VW IMO. What engine size is it? I presume it is DSG.

I am considering a SEAT (another devalued VW Group brand) to replace the Smart I drive daily. It is some 2.000 EUR cheaper than the VW Polo with more equipment and the same mechanicals.

Hi reginos, thank you for the nice words, car is 2.0 litre diesel with manual transmission. Strangely the DSG official figures are some 5 -6 mpg down on the manual (can't quite understand why petrol DSG is quicker and more economical but diesel equipped DSG is the exact opposite). Fuel consumption overall is a very good 59.2 mpg and steadily improving. I do high mileage (20,000 per year) so diesel makes more sense than petrol.

SWMBO very nearly bought a Seat Ibiza SC FR 1.4 with DSG, lovely car and fun to drive and I think she now regrets that she didn't, in the end she went for her default Honda Jazz, not a bad car car for a shopping trolley but dreadfully sluggish and dull.

I completely admitted the prejudice and I also explained why.  Smiley

Let me give you another example: My wife's parents forced her to eat a boiled egg each and every day until she was 12 or so. Since then, she cannot stand the look or smell of a boiled egg. For that reason, she also doesn't like scrambled or sunny side up style eggs. Same with me and Skoda. Smiley

Speaking of Daihatsu: I love driving cars of various brands, not only sports cars. Yes, I have driven a Daihatsu and even a Toyota IQ lately and trust me, I hate these cars. Number one on my hate list: The Smart. Had one for my business for three years, I lighted a candle in the church when the car was gone. Smiley Drove a Renault Twizy 45 though, I am thinking about getting one for my daughter when she turns 16 (minimum age for such a car in Germany) and I can't say I loved it but it was an interesting experience, especially for that kind of money.

Nope, I was driving an Opel Kadett GSi and later on a Mercedes 190E 2.6, thanks god. Both cars in their first year of production.

I saw Skodas on every corner of the region I lived in, saw old and new cars, full or rust, breaking down all the time, making horrible sounds, stinking and so on. For me, Skodas, Trabants, Dacias, Oltcits and Wartburgs were hell on earth. As a car lover, I hated these abominations of cars. I know that nowadays, Skoda makes modern cars but the image in my head isn't gone, I'm sorry. You guys cannot understand this but coming from the West and living/working in a communist country with very limited access to certain "normal" things (for us in the West) kind of takes it's (psychological) toll. This is why I hate everything socialist/communist and this is why I hate certain products from the past. Only those who were in the same situation can understand.

    Hilarous... Smiley

I think you made the right choice with your Skoda, the new one came out very, very well. I can tolerate RC´s aversion towards the brand but it´s not only the VW underpinnings that make the difference, the cars are also built very well. Something I cannot entirely say about Seat, most of their cars that I drove were not that spectacular.

Eggs provide a lot of Vitamin D that helps kid develop strong bodies. Your wife's parents did her a favor.

Skodas then were mainly good the for testing one's ability to resist carbon monoxide poisoning.

There was a change of plans regarding my daily runabout. I wanted to buy from available stock and by the time I decided, the only choice was the Polo. The SEATs were gone and the only TDI available was the 1.2 3 cylinder which is in the 3.5lt/100km class but very sluggish. I didn't want to order and wait for some 3-4 months as I had to part-exchange the Smart asap which was getting very scruffy and unfit.

I got a nice Polo 1.2 TSI 105 PS with 7 speed DSG, in Pepper Grey.  I have covered 1.000 km so far and it has exceeded my expectations. Very well finished, materials of a class or two above, lots of refinement in the city  and in faster cruising, good speed for the category and an excellent engine/DSG matching. Economy is promising given that the engine is not run-in yet.  In the Highline edition with additional climate control, rear parking sensors, cruise control and some other extras the price was significantly lower than the German price list which I used for reference. Even allowing for whatever discounts dealers give in Germany, the price was super attractive and the part-exchange very fair.

So, now I am 100% VW Group, with Porsche, Audi and VW  Smiley

Great choice! The Polo is a very neat little car. the Fabia is too dull and looks like a shed, and the Audi A1 nice but hugely overpriced. I certainly wouldn't go near a Ford or anything French. I'm sure you will be well satisfied Smiley

The Audi A1 is a gem but way too expensive for the intended purpose. I checked the new Clio but it was below par for my taste in many areas.

Not sure what is going on with the Alfa Romeo 4C. Was at a local dealer today (was in the neighborhood, looked at a nice Fiat 500 Abarth again) and the sales person just kept his mouth shut, nothing. He told me to leave a card, so he can contact me but no date, no details about the car, nothing. Strange.

I guess even Alfa Romeo cannot do wonders...
